Stockton June 4th 1891

Dear Alice

I received your letter Tuesday afternoon, and was very sorry to hear that you were having such a time with your ear, but hope it will be well before the examinations commence.

Emma J. and Ben, with Frank and myself accompanied your father to the Pioneer dedication last night. Your father made inquires about the street cars and they told him they would run till half past 11, so we went down that way, and when we came out about 20 minutes before 11 there was no car there and your father said we had better walk along instead of standing there waiting. When we got to the Commercial he wanted me to go in and wait till he came home after the horse, but I would not, so we poked along and finally we got home at 20 minutes of 12. I presume if we had waited till half past 11 there would have been a car then, and I wished before I got home that we had.

Emma J. has been intending to go down Friday morning and stay all night, but Ben has a bad cold, was feeling miserably last night and when your father went over this morning he was in bed. So if you do not see her tomorrow you may know it was because he is sick.

Mrs Oullahan sang last night and your father said if he heard that noise out in the woods, he would think some one was being murdered. What would a good judge of music think of such a remark as that.

You may go to the P.O. on your birthday. I will try and have something for you unless I have a chance to send some other way, but I think it will hardly pay to pay postage on a box of candy; perhaps I will send 10 cts so that you may buy some.

The time will soon come now when you will be here and there are lots of old dresses & shoes in your closet waiting for you to wear them out.

I hope you will be well for the examinations but if you are not let it be known so that they may make what allowance for you that they will. Your mother

E. M. Watrous.

P.S. Your father has just been over to see Ben. They have had the Dr and he says he has the lagrippe.
