The Harmon Genealogical Society CDROM
This section is meant to explain the CDROM idea. Several people have expressed horror at the idea that I would charge money for information I gathered for free on the internet. I, personally, would also have issues with someone making a profit off of my free information.
However, I do not intend to make a profit on these CDs. The charge is just a rough estimate of what it will cost me to produce and ship these CDs. That is all I will charge.
I will have all of the information that will be on the CDs also available for free download from the website. The purpose behind the CDs is to make the information available for users with slow connections. Just to upload the small fraction I currently have entered takes me about a half hour on a high-speed connection. Users with slow modems will not likely be able to download the information.
The reason I felt the need to explain this is that I've received a few emails through the course of this collection aghast that I would even think of charging for this information. These letters always make me feel a litte like I've been kicked. I have spent literally hundreds of hours working on this website, and intend to spend hundreds more. I also hope to soon move the website to a dedicated server (to get rid of the extremely slow load times), and possibly register a domain name for it (to make the site easier to find for researchers just starting to look into the Harmon name). None of this is free. I put in my time and money because I enjoy the hobby, and want the information to be available to anyone who wants it. To be accused of trying to make a profit off of free information makes me feel extremely unappreciated.
