The Shankle lines

The earliest SHANKLE on this line that I have been able to find is Wade Hampton Shankle Sr. b. about 1822 in Alabama. Family information has his wife's name as Callie Oden; however, I have not been able to verify this. She was probably the mother of our Wade Hampton Shankle Jr. born in 1849. Recent info indicates she was American Indian ... probably Cherokee.

Burearu of Land Managment records list Wade H. Shankle as Patentee with 147.89 acres in Panola Co., MS with a signature date of 09/01/1848.

The 1870 Kaufman Co., TX census lists Wade Hampton Shankle, age 48, b. AL; no wife listed but with 7 children: Caroline 24 b. IL; Sarah 23 b.MS; Indiana 22 b.MS; Wade 21 b.MS; Elizabeth 18 b.MS; Joanna 14 b.TX;and Margret 12 b.TX.

[Info from g.granddaughter of Margret Shankle (Burton) indicates her death cert lists her father as Hamp Shankles b. MS. so evidently Wade Hampton Shankle Sr. went by "Hamp" or Hampton. Thank you Carolyn Brown for this info]

Then the 1880 Kaufman Co.,TX census lists W.Hampton Shankle age 58 b.AL;wife Mary age 36 b.IL and 5 children: Louisa 9; John 7; Annie 5; Ida 3; and Robert 1.

1880 Kaufman Co.,TX census lists Wade Shankle (Jr)age 29 b.MS; wife Josephine 22 b.TX;child:Gilbert age 1 b.TX;also in household: Sallie Coombes 16 and Emily Beaubin 9.

Wade Shankle Jr. m. Josephine Bonepark Coombs about 1877; they had 10 children: Gilbert b.1878 TX; Ewing b.1881 TX d.1883; Conner b.1883 TX; Allie b.1885; John Leslie b.1887 TX; Annie Laura d.at birth 1889 OK; Iva b.1892 OK; Eva Lou b.1895 OK; Dorothy b.1889 TX; Forrest b.1901 OK d.1921. Wade Jr. d.1921 in Miami,TX; Josephine d. 1934 in Norman, OK.
