William first moved to Butte during the 1880s. The following was
in his obituary.
``For five years he a J.D. Slemons were partners in the real
estate business and did well until Mr. Lawlor's wife became ill and he
went to Los Angeles to live. She died there and later he removed to
Seattle, where he entered the banking business with Benjaimn[sic]
White. From there he returned to Butte and entered the realty field
with J. H. Rowe. Later he joined interests with Mr. Rowe and
J. T. O'Brien and upon the latter's retirement from business the firm
became Lawlor and Rowe. He was possessed of great business ability and
acquired considerable wealth in Butte.''
Some of the information about William's children initially came to me
from David Tague, a researcher who is a relative of his last wife,
Elizabeth. Names and dates for the children and wives are established
with census and other records. The facts about William from the
censuses certainly fit this William, son of Patrick. In the Montana
censuses, he was born in 1859 in Iowa to Irish parents, which fits
perfectly, and also has the middle initial of V. He also named a son
Reed, which is also William's mother's maiden name, of course.
Lyman Morrison found the 1886 Clinton Co. marriage record betwen
William Lawler and Ella Kelley. I am not certain (and I don't believe
Lyman had any further evidence) whether that applies to this William.
It might have been a first marriage for William before Margaret or Elizabeth,
but the 1910 Montana census entry for William states he has been
married twice, and the other two marriages for that William in Montana
are certain. So Ella may not have been a wife of this William.
The Clinton Age newspaper had a birth announcement of a daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. William Lawler, born April 18, 1891 in Clinton,
published May 3. The father is listed as a merchant. I don't have any
evidence that it is this same William Lawler.
After finding the census entries and marriage information for the William
Lawler in Montana, I believe the 1891 birth probably is for a son of a
different William, but I'm including the info here just in case.
William, his wife, and their 4 children are listed in the 1900 census
in Butte, Montana, but his wife and children (but not William) are also
listed in the census in Salt Lake City that year. William's sister, Ann
Blessington is with the family in Salt Lake City.
