William's funeral was held at St. Columbkille's which is at Grand Ave. and Paulina St. but the church is now closed. The huge Mt. Carmel Cemetery is at 1400 S. Wolf Rd., Hillside, IL 60162-2197, 708-449-8300, which is right where Interstates 88, 290, and 294 intersect.
I think it was this William J. Shannon who married Elizabeth Davoren because that wedding also took place in St. Columbkille's. Elizabeth is buried with her parents in Evanston, without her husband, which doesn't prove anything, but it does leave the door open for her husband to have been this William. Also supporting the conclusion that it was this William who married Elizabeth is a journal entry made by Bridget De Sales Shannon, apparently in 1887. It reads, ``Monday, July 18, Grandpa out calling. Three years ago today Loretta Shannon died.'' July 18 was a Monday in 1887, and the front of the notebook contained the date Oct. 25, 1886. There isn't any other Loretta Shannon in the family that we know of that is even close to fitting. (``Grandpa'' must refer to Bridget's grandfather, Jeremiah Lucey).
William and Catherine are buried with the following family members at Mt. Carmel: William, Catherine, James P., Margaret (dau-in-law) and John (son) Shannon, Zita Ann Shannon Burchfield (granddaughter), and Agnes M. Carr (daughter) and Leslie H. Carr (son-in-law). Margaret is probably James' wife. I don't know for sure which son was her husband, but I think James is from the order in which I was told the names. They have graves 1--8, lot 27, block 5, section F. Mt. Carmel is large, but you should be able to find Section F just driving around. These graves are near the south end of it. There is a large Shannon marker, then smaller individual headstones flat on the ground.
Kate O'Gorman's younger sister Theresa married William's nephew, who was also named William Shannon.
