Something odd must have happened because Denis' younger brother Edward J. got himself appointed guardian of Denis' and Sarah's children in 1890. There was no mention of the father and it said, ``children of Sarah Lucey''. Also, in 1898, he (Edward J.) lists the same 4 (Jeremiah A. had already died) children on the heir list of Jeremiah Lucey and no mention of Denis Lucey (their father) in the probate records. Denis' father, Jeremiah, died intestate, so I don't know how Denis could have been disinherited without a will. Denis is mentioned in his father Jeremiah's obituary as still living in Chicago, so he is still living. Denis is in the 1910 Chicago census index, living by himself (other family obituaries between 1898 and 1925 also list Denis as living in Chicago).
The only historical records we've found which might give a hint is the fact that Denis married out of the church after his first wife died. Denis and Lena Pohl were married by a Justice of the Peace and in the 1895 Iowa census, Lena (Denis isn't living with her) is listed as Presbyterian. Perhaps this marriage, or his subsequent divorce caused some rift between him and the rest of the family. In the 1895 Iowa census, his second wife Lena is living in Boone with their three children and Lena is listed as divorced. Denis and Sarah's son William is living with his aunt Margaret Deegan.
