He was known as Vesta, and attended country school near his home. After marriage, he and Mary farmed near White Pigeon. He was a member of the Christian Church, first in White Pigeon, then later in North English. A memorial donation in Vesta's name was made to the North English church for purchase of an organ there in 1957.
