In the TQ Matthews letter, TQ names an uncle as ``David''. This David E. appears in all the same locales as the rest of the Matthews family, and this suggests that David E. might be Joel's son David. I don't make too much over the presence of the middle initial E. because it isn't used in the record of David's marriage to Hester/Hetta Goodman. But there are some items which raise the possibility that David E. is some other Matthews, probably related, but not necessarily Joel's son. The first item is from a deposition given by David E.'s widow (Hester) for a War of 1812 pension application in Cedar County, Iowa. In this, Hester states that ``she was married to the said David E. Matthews in the month of August in the year AD 1805 by one preacher ---- Matthews'' in Pulaski County, Kentucky. It seems odd that Hester would have not have known or said the minister was David E.'s father, if it was.

The next confusing item comes from the 1820 census of Ross County, Ohio. In Ross County, there are several Matthews, many of them of this Matthews line. David E. Matthews is listed on page 291 in Paint Township. But there is another David Matthews listed next to an Andrew Matthews on page 310 in Buckskin Twp. So it is possible that either one of David E. or David might be Joel's son.

From later pension applications, we know several details of David E.'s service in the War of 1812. On Nov. 6, 1850 in Cedar County, Iowa, he signed a Bounty Land application. He stated that he was a Private in Captain Simmons [Seamond's] Company, in the Infantry Regiment commanded by Boswell, he volunteered/substituted in place of ---- Crow who was drafted at Paris, Bourbon Co., Ky. in March 1813 for 6 months and was honorably discharged at Sandusky (Ohio) late Sept. 1813.

In 1855, he ``declares he was a Private in Capt. Simmon's Co., Reg't of Kentucky Militia, commanded by Col. Boswell, drafted June 1813 for 6 months and discharged at F. Meigs (Ohio) for Bounty Land warrant of 80 acres.'' (Simmon's should be spelled Seamond's.)

David E. and family remained in Ross County until sometime before 1840 They are found in Davies Twp, Fountain County, Indiana in the 1840 Census, three lines away from his son George Washington Matthews. The 1850 census of Rochester, Cedar County, Iowa, lists David E. Matthews and wife Hetta living with James Mathews. Also Fountain, (brother of James) living in same house. On the next page are the Oliver J. and Greenville Matthews families.

Much of the information about David E. Matthews was originally collected by David E.'s descendent P. Wayne Rose and his wife Anne.
