William's parents died when he was young. After his mother died, he lived with his uncle Valentine for a year, then with Joel Myers for about four years before setting off on his own. His schooling was very limited --- he only attended school a few days after he was eight years old.

According to a Morgan family history, he ``was called `Rile' by his friends.'' ``He enlisted in Company D, 43 Reg. Indiana Vol. Inf. on Sept. 18, 1861. He participated in Battles of Memphis, Helena, Ft. Pillow, and Mark's Mill. Was captured and marched to Tyler, Texas and imprisoned for 10 months. He was exchanged as a prisoner of war in March, 1865; discharged on July 14, 1865 at close of the War.''

After his marriage he moved to Champaign county, Illinois and farmed there until 1870, when he returned to Vigo county. He and his wife here members of the Christian Church.
