Mary was a Sisters of Mercy nun known as Sister Mary Angela, later (by the time her father died in 1896) as Mother Angela. Her father's obituaries describe her as the ``superioress'' or assistant in charge of Mercy Hospital in Dubuque.

She entered the convent at Davenport, Iowa on Aug. 8, 1870, received the habit on Apr. 16, 1871, and made her profession of vows in 1873. She went to Dubuque in 1879 ``on new foundation''.
