Amanda was one of eleven children of J.L. Williams and Nancy B. McCracken, who were from Washington County, Tennessee. Her parents brought their family to Iowa County in 1850. Her father was a farmer who was elected to the 16th Iowa state assembly and held several county offices over the years.
