John immigrated to the US with his parents in 1857, settling in New York state. In 1866 they came to Iowa.

John and Amanda moved to Kansas from the North English area about 1878. They homesteaded on a quarter section about three miles east of Macksville. About 1907 they moved into the town of Macksville.

John was a member of the Christian Church for many years. Amanda was the same religion, being a charter member of the North English Christian Church.
