Sadie took care of the family after her mother died. There was a succession of hired girls, none of whom worked out. Sadie also kept house for everyone after they moved to North English until 1918 when the kids were through school and Charles was being married. Sadie attended Business School in Cedar Rapids starting in 1918. She worked at the county courthouse before her marriage. She and John lived in Chicago for many years and later retired to Wilton Junction.

Here are some of Mary Ferne (Morrison) Franklin's memories of Sadie:

Sadie was a court reporter for Iowa County in Marengo. As a little girl, I remember going with my dad to see her at the courthouse. That's where she met her husband, John ``Jack'' Shuger. He was a county auditor at the time. They moved to Chicago shortly after they were married and they lived there until Jack's retirement. They then moved back to Wilton Junction, Iowa, which is where Jack grew up. They lived there until their death. Sadie was really quite a great lady for her time. She was very proper and she took me under her wing and tried to show me how to do things, and tried to make a lady out of me. Didn't work too well, but,... Both buried in Wilton. He was a credit manager with Montgomery Wards in Chicago for years.

Sadie went to business college in Cedar Rapids. She was the first person I knew who really played the stock market. She'd find a stock she liked and she'd keep a running account of it for 6 months before she'd buy it. She did make quite a little money off of it.
