Alice described her home life as a child as hectic, growing up as the youngest of six with no mother. She had fond memories of her half brothers Ed and Jesse, who were always good to their baby sister Alice. She attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids where she was known by 'Licia, which deteriorated to ``Lish''.
Alice taught school for a few years before her marriage. After her marriage, they moved to Miami and Alice owned and operated a jewelry store in Miami. Vance had a crippling stroke in 1944 and Alice sold her business so she could take care of Vance.
Alice had to spend a lot of time taking care of her husband Vance after his stroke but accepted their fate and wouldn't have missed a minute of their life together. She was active in her Methodist church well into her old age. She enjoyed a very special and memorable trip to the Holy Land in 1974. Alice liked to write poetry and called herself a ``versifier.'' She wrote in 1979 that she had had three proposals from men in the nine years since Vance had died, but she never really seriously considered accepting any of them.
Mary Ferne (Morrison) Franklin recalled that, ``Alice told me she was the first woman to graduate from the business college in Iowa City at the University.''
