Joseph never married. Before the US entered WW I, he
worked in the telegraph service of Union Pacific railroad.
He enlisted in the signal corps of the army and spent a year
and a half in the service with a balloon company. He was in France for
six months and reached the front the day the armistice was signed.
After the war he was a brickmason in Hastings and worked on many
large construction projects there and elsewhere.
He was a foreman on a hospital building at Havre, Montana at one point.
