Isabelle (also called Isabella) ran a candy store in Chicago named Shannon's Gold Coast Chocolates, making and selling home-made chocolates. She lived with her cousin % Walter Shannon % who supposedly ended up with her candy recipes.
Mary (Shannon) Flood also reported the fact that Isabelle ran a Shannon candy store in Chicago Isabelle apparently took over the candy business from her mother. A 1923 Chicago city directory lists Ellen (widow of John) Shannon as a chocolate manufacturer, residing at 1822 Park Ave. and Isabelle H. Shannon is listed at the same address, with an occupation of assistant to Mrs. Ellen Shannon. Ellen started the candy business as early as 1907. But it appears that Isabelle was a natural for the business because a newspaper article about her says, ``As a child she was known as the `little girl who could make good candy.' So, candy it is today.''
Later on, after Isabelle had taken over the business, it was located at her house at 1822 Maypole Avenue. That's just a couple blocks north of where the United Center arena now is. This had once been the home of her mother's parents.
Isabelle kept in touch with the Clinton Co., Iowa Shannon branch. and attended various functions such as reunions and funerals. Several of the Iowa family visited her and her candy factory. According to one of the Iowans, Mary (McDermott) Ryan, Isabelle was also an artist. She painted (with a needle) a Sacred Heart image on some lady's watch and then many sought that gift from her.
