Great Sacandaga Lake

These pages contain many pictures of Great Sacandaga Lake and may load a little slowly, please be patient.
The Great Sacandaga Lake was created to reduce the impact of spring flooding along the Hudson River. Its purpose is to hold back the spring runoff that flows into the Sacandaga River north of the Conklingville Dam. Prior to its creation in 1929 downstream towns and cities, as well as industries were flooded in the spring runoff. Holding back the water and controlling its release not only greatly reduced the flooding but it also provided water for industry during the dry summer months. I am enclosing pictures that are my own as well as some from Larry Hart's book The Sacandaga Story
A Valley of Yesteryear
. Larry was kind enough to allow me to do this and for that I'm truly grateful.

This is the view from what we locals call "The Overlook". The Conklingville Dam is visible in the lower part of the picture.

View up the valley from just east of the photo above prior to the construction of the Conklingville Dam. The village of Conklingville can be seen in the distance. Our store is in Conklingville and was moved to its present Conklingville location before the valley was flooded in 1929

Conklingville as seen across the Sacandaga River before construction of the dam. The foundation of this factory is still visible today when the water level is low. The white house visible above the factory on the right was moved to higher ground and stands today on North Shore Road.
