Donald Gray is a valuable source for the Gray and Publicover families. I met him in 1984 when we traveled to Nova Scotia as a vacation and as an opportunity to look into our family history, mainly the Publicovers. He was not directly related to me although had done some research in our line. When I returned from Australia in 1989 and tried to contact him I found out he had passed away in 1988. I am not sure of the source of his material but I am entering it here for posterity who may wish to follow up on what he has reported. Of course, I have included his material in my write-ups of the families. I met him briefly at his home in Halifax. The letter that follows was sent to me the following year. 57 Westgrove Place, Apt 15 Mr. Wallace F. Gray Dear Wallace, I'm sorry that it took me so long to write you regarding the family name of Publicover but we have been on the go . . . . I had not been able to get any or much information regarding any connection between the Grays and the Publicovers until yesterday, so here goes with what I have, hope you can find something in it to help you. Johann Michael Publicover was born in Germany ca 1749 and sailed from Rotterdam in June 1751 arriving in Halifax, N.S. on July 12/1751 with his parents and the rest of the family, on the ship "Ann". In 1753 a large number of the starving and depressed people went to Lunenburg,, N.S. In 1780 he married Christina Elizabeth Vogler of West Dublin, N.S., they had 10 children and in 1809 they moved to Blandford, N.S. [NOTE by WFG: Much of this information is incorrect. It was Johann Michael's father, John Peter Bubickhoffer, who immigrated to Canada from the Palatinate. Please refer to John Peter Bubickhoffer for the verified information as well as to John Michael Bubeckhoffer for the verified information also. Our records show they had eleven children.] 1. See note 7C note 7C . . . . The only connection that I was able to locate with the Gray connection and the Publicovers was from James Publicover, a brother of Johann Michaels [sic] Publicover, who had a daughter Ada Mary that married Albert Joseph Gray [sic], this might be a help to you. All the best in your digging your roots, let me know how you make out, as ever, DONALD G. GRAY |
