William Penington SPURGIN and wife Margaret of Laurens Co, SC to Thomas HOLDEN of same; for 110 pds. sterling sold 300 ac on N. side Enoree R; border: vacant; surveyed "to" Robert Lindsey who sold to Jacob PENNINGTON who sold to John SPURGIN and by right of heirship to his son William P. SPURGIN, John SPURGIN died intestate. Witness: John PENINGTON, John HOLDEN, and Jno Power. Signed Wm Penington SPURGIN and Margaret's mark. Rec. 17 March 1800.

p. 415-416. 24 August 1794. Thomas HOLDEN of Laurens Co, SC to Isaac Hamby , Sr. of same; for 200 pds. SC money sold 300 ac on N. side of Enoree R; border: vacant; grant to William Lindsey who sold to Jacob PENINGTON who sold to John SPURGIN, who died intestate, and by heirship to his son William SPURGIN who sold to Thomas HOLDEN. Witness: John HOLDEN and Aaron Baughcom. Signed Thomas HOLDEN. Rec. 18 March 1800. Dower renounced Margaret HOLDEN to Thomas Moore 20 September 1799.

Thomas Holden, 1799, Jul 6, Deed, Laurens Co, Buys 185 ac Washington District, wife Margaret "Thomas Holden and Margaret his wife of Laurens County to William Megregory of Pendleton Co., for L30 sterling, 185 acin in Washington District on a branch of Generostee called the devils Fork Waters of Savannah River being part of 1,000 ac granted to said Holden January 1, 1787." Signed Thos. Holden and Margaret Holden. Wit: Joel Peerson and Peramon Tate.

Amite County, Mississippi: Mississippi Territory opened up to settlement in 1798. Thomas Sr. and Jr., Harvey Pearson (son in law) and other members of the family removed from SC to settle in that part of the territory named "St. Helena Parish, LA. Soon afterwards, Thomas Sr., and his families moved across the Tickfaw River into what is now Amite Co., MS.

3 males > 21, 1 male under 21, 4 females 6 slaves

10 May 1805. Claim No. 1060. Mathew Robertson claims 992 acres as a pre-emption situate in Wilkinson County on the Tickfuhs in virtue of his own settlement. Witness, William FLANNAGEN, says that the claimant was the head of a family and began to deaden timber and cut down cane, etc, a little after Christmas in 1802 and had about a quarter of an acre deadened and the cane cut down by the March following, and in that month built a house and moved on it with his family and lived on it until he made two crops. Then he sold it to Thomas HOLDING, Sr. (HOLDEN) Thomas HOLDING produces a conveyance of the above claim from Mathew Robertson to him dated 26 April 1805, filed with the register. (Vol. 3, p. 919).
