Graduated from Center High School in May of 1947.  In July I went to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company.   I had worked three years when I was drafted into the Army.  I served two years in the Army and fought in the Korean War.   After returning home, I went back to work with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company and in January of 1953, married the late Wilma Jean Burkhalter.  We had two children, Louis Wayne and Sheila Ann.  At the time of Wilma's death, we had been married almost thirty-eight years. Wayne graduated from Center High School in 1972 and went on to graduate form Stephen F. Austin with a Bachelor's degree in Accounting.  He received a Masters degree in Accounting from the University of Texas in Arlington.  Wayne followed in my footsteps in going to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company.  Wayne and his wife Natalie have three children, Daniel-age 16, Cassie-age 14, and Aaron-age 7.  They currently live in San Antonio, Texas.  Wayne is a avid runner who participates in races and marathons in Texas and across the country.  Wayne"s position with Southwestern Bell requires him to travel quite frequently to New York.  A few years ago, on a business trip to New York, Wayne had an opportunity to enter and complete the New York marathon which is a twenty six mile race.  Wayne's children also participate in a variety of sports.   All of the children participate in soccer.  Daniel is on the basketball team with his school, and Cassie and Aaron are on the swim team at their local club.   Sheilah graduated from Center High School in 1982 and went on to graduate from Stephen F. Austin with a Bachelors's degree in Business.  In 1986, she married Bob Reeves, also of Center.  They live in Center where they both work for Bob's family business, C & R Refrigeration, Inc.  Sheilah and Bob also have three children.  Chelsea-age 9, Abby-age 7, and Adam-age 9 months.  Sheilah and Bob are members of First Baptist Church in Center and are active participants in civic and community projects.    Sheilah serves as an Ambassador and on the board of directors of Shelby County Chamber of Commerce.  Bob serves as a board member of the Center Independent School District, and as chairman of the Shelby County Republican party.   He was also appointed by Governor George W. Bush to serve as chairman of the International Trade Commission in 1995. At the time of my retirement, I had thirty-eight years of service with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company.  I retired in the Spring of 1985, and have thoroughly enjoyed every day of retirement.

After high school I attended Stephen F. Austin State College, earning a degree with a major in mathematics and a minors in music and library science.  In the fall of 1950 I started teaching at Gary in Panola County.  In December of 1950 I married Pat.  He was drafted in the Army early in 1951 and I continued teaching at Gary while he was in the Army.  After Pat's Army service we moved to Carthage where he worked for Champlin Gas and Oil Company and I taught public school music in grades 1 through 6.  My first daughter, Suzanne, was born in 1956 and I retired a few years.  Since the Carthage School Board had a policy that prevented a woman with a pre-school age child from teaching and because there was a shortage of math teachers in neighboring schools, I went back to teaching elsewhere.  After my second daughter, Roxanne, was born in 1958, I taught in Timpson, Joaquin, and back in Gary again - finally coming back to the Carthage Schools as a junior high math teacher and later as a high school math teacher. During the Years that my girls were in school, Pat and I worked with the Camp Fire Program and the Band Parents' Organization.  As a result, I've sold more snow cones and hot dogs at concession stands than I care to remember.  We were all members of the Carthage Church of Christ and enjoyed being in church related activities.  Pat died in 1984 and in 1986 I retired from teaching after having taught a total of 29 years. Since my retirement I have been active in church works, several local organizations, and the Panola County Child Protective Service Board.  I enjoy cooking and write a weekly recipe column for our local newspaper.  I also enjoy traveling, reading, and checking out all the Mexican food restaurants in our area.

I have 5 grandchildren who are a delight to me.  My only granddaughter, Emily, lives in Arlington and is a junior in high school.  My oldest grandson, Andy, lives in Marshall and attends Panola College.  The other 3 grandsons live in Panola County near the community of Old Center.  They are Trevor (age 9), Ethan (age 8) and Lucas (age 6).  My mother, who is 96 years old, has lived in Carthage since 1979 and is presently one of the six residents in a health-care facility here.               Considering all, it has been a good 50 years and I am looking forward to many more years.  I am now very appreciative of the fact that I am a graduate of Center High School with roots in Shelby County.

My first year of teaching was as band director, choir director, music teacher and a little bit of everything else in Tenaha.  That was enough for me.  After that I was a classroom teacher.  I married a fellow clarinet player whom I met in S.F.A. band---Jim Hammett.  I spent about a year in Germany, while Jim was in the army band. After we got back to Nacogdoches, Jim worked as a student assistant to the S.F.A. band and we had a daughter, Kim Lee.  Jim's first teaching assignment was in Marshall, and that first year we had a son, James Kevin.  After the youngest child was in the first grade, I went back to teaching and taught in Marshall, and then in Nacogdoches until I retired in 1988.

We have two granddaughters, Courtney Lee who is 15 and Kathryn (Kate) who is 10.  Their family has just recently moved to Tyler, and we will really miss having them close.  Our son Kevin works in Dallas.

My fondest memories of high school are being in the band, doing the senior play, and just getting together with friends at June's, Tucker's,. Alonzola's, Betty's etc.  I loved riding around the square, going to Big Ditch, and to Tyler State Park.  Going swimming and playing tennis were great fun, too.  Hanging out at the drug store drinking malts and eating sundaes, going to the movies, going skating, and going to slumber parties were unforgettable.  Jim and I are both retired now and we are getting to do some traveling and camping.  We especially love Arkansas and Colorado.
