Main chart | Breakers

Weekend 1: January 6-9

A very quiet week for UK singles releases, with barely half a dozen to get excited about. The Pet Shop Boys look set for a decent position with the snappily titled You Only Tell Me You Love Me When You're Drunk.
American rockers Creed hoped for a Top 20 placing, and appearance on Top of the Pops, with the anthemic Higher. I had hoped that UK radio would pick up big on this one, but it wasn't to be, as the single stiffed at #47 sales. Shame.
Canadian rockers Our Lady Peace launched onto the UK scene with One Man Army. I hoped it would make the top 40, but it was going to be touch and go. More go than touch, sadly, as it bowed at #70 sales.

Sensational scenes on the Billboard Chart, as Santana's Smooth relinquishes the top spot after thirteen weeks. The new list leader is Christina Aguilera's What A Girl Wants, climbing from last week's #11. That's the fastest climb to the top since the Hot 100 underwent its big changes in December 98. Smooth slips to 2, with Brian McKnight's Back At One #3. Savage Garden's I Knew I Loved You advances two places to #4, while Eifell 65's Blue climbs two at 11. The Foo Fighters' Learn To Fly enters the Top 20, while Lonestar's country number one from last summer, Amazed, storms from 45 to 23 as it gets picked up by AC radio. Top-placed British act is Robbie Williams, whose Angels climbs ten places to #54.

There's a new leader on the Billboard Albums, too: rapper Jay-Z enters at the top with Volume 3: Life and Times of S Carter. Last week's leader DMX is nudged to 2, with Celine at 3. Britney Spears slumps from 6 to 16, ending her streak in the top 10 at 50 weeks. This week's leading UK act is Bush, whose The Science Of Things moves up 12 places to 62. Charlotte Church (#88) and Sting (#91) also fly the Union flag.

All change on the MuchMusic and MuchMoreMusic charts. On the pop network, Jennifer Lopez's Waiting For Tonight takes the top slot, with Chocolair placing second with Let's Ride. Last time's leader Limp Bizkit are #3, the Foo Fighters #4 and Rage Against the Machine #5. Blue climbs four places to #9. New entries for the Backstreet Boys (Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely, #21) and Britney Spears (From the Bottom of my Broken Heart, #27). There's no British talent on the list.

Over on the sister AT network, Enrique Iglesias' Rhythm Divine takes charge at the top, with Celine Dion's That's The Way It Is the runner-up. Great Big Sea start the great big slide, Feel It Turn slips from 5 to 6. George Michael's Roxanne is #12, Jewel's What's Simple Is True advances to #14, the Coors' Radio makes #20 and Sting's Desert Rose is #25. There are two new entries: Tina Turner's When the Heartache is Over (#28) and Faith Hill's Breathe (#29).

Weekend 2: January 13-16

Pre-teen pop rules the release schedule this week. Justin (Let it be me, top 20 only because he was all over the telly over Christmas {he made 15}), Point Break (top 40, maybe {7 on sales, but no airplay}) and Scooch (in or around #10 {5}) are the anodyne, anonymous, replaceable frontpeople for this week.

Slightly higher - but only very slightly - in the credibility stakes is the person who takes an old vocal line and puts new beats under that. Funkstar Deluxe did that to Bob Marley last year, and haven't learned to stop yet. Their new release, Rainbow Country, should go top 5. {Sneaked in at 11, surprising a lot of people}

Two modern soul hits get their release: Donel Jones' U Know What's Up has gone top 10 Stateside, and should enjoy similar success in the UK. {#2! Ha!} Missy Elliot releases her Hot Boyz; though it deserves slightly better, I think she'll be lucky to break #15. {#18 sales}

Gimmick of the week goes to the Manic Street Preachers' The Masses Against the Classes. It's available as a limited edition only, record company code for "this will only appeal to the committed fan so let's get it off out books as quickly as possible." A #1 sales entry looks assured, but it'll be nowhere in three weeks time. {It got the entry}

For sheer cheek, Chumbawumba deserves a mention with their record, Tony Blair. It points out how our beloved PM has slightly reneged on his socialist credentials. Distribution seems to have been difficult, so a top 40 sales place is not promised, but the guts are there. {Missed the sales Top 75.}

An old face returns to the top of the Billboard Albums: Santana's Supernatural returns to the top spot from #8 last week. Jay-Z drops to #2, DMX to #3, Celine Dion #4. Now That's What I Call Music! 3 climbs two spots to anchor the top 5.
Big moves for Eiffel 65's Europop (23-12); Sting's Brand New Day (91-53); Dixie Chicks' Wide Open Spaces (80-58); and Lonestar's Lonely Grill (94-60). Macy Gray's On How Life Is, a resident of the UK's Top Ten for the last few months, bows into the Top 100 at #66. Charlotte Church (#70) pips Bush (#71) for the second-placed UK act, with Eric Clapton's Clapton Chronicles making #88 and Charlotte's Voice of an Angel #90.

No change atop the Billboard Hot 100, as Christina Aguilera holds for week 2. Savage Garden moves past Santana and Brian McKnight for the runner-up slot. Eifell 65's Blue cracks the top 10 at #9, while Destiny's Child (Say My Name, 38-16), Lonestar (Amazed, 23-17) and Train (Meet Virginia, 21-20) make top 20 bows. Lonestar has a second single on the top 50, as Smile makes #47 - that's a hit at country while Amazed has crossed to AC. There's new Backstreet Boys material, Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely shoots 55-25. Good climbs for Blink 182 (All the Small Things, 50-35) and Filter (Take a Picture, 31-21) please the mod-rock crowd. Top-placed UK act is still Robbie Williams - Angels nibbles another place, 54-53. Third Eye Blind has the highest new entry, Never Let You Go enters at #65. Right out of favour is Kenny G's Auld Lang Syne, pitting news clips from the past 80 years to the strains of the traditional hand-holding song (Hey, it's better lyrics than The Lord's Prayer...) It's had the amazing career in the higher half of the chart of 7-8-66.

No changes at the top of the MuchMusic charts, as Jennifer Lopez holds off Chocolair for the second week. The Foo's fly up to 3, with Eifell 65 storming from 9 to 4. Korn's Falling Away From Us rounds off the top 5. Lower down, the Backstreet Boys' Show me the Meaning of Being Lonely climbs from 21 to 13. There are new entries from frivolous bands: Aqua's Cartoon Heroes bows at 26, while Bring It All Back gives British act S Club 7 their debut at 29.

The MuchMoreMusic countdown sees Enrique Iglesias' Rhythm Divine hold at the top, with Celine Dion second. The Counting Crows, Sky and a duet between Bob Marley and Lauryn Hill round out the top 5. British representation: George Michael's Roxanne moves 12-11, Sting's Desert Rose moves 25-20. There are new entries for Santana, Maria Maria at 24; and Love Wins Everytime for McMaster & James at 29.

Weekend 3: January 20-23

New Releases Britney Spears heads the schedule, with her fourth single. Born to Make You Happy is an upbeat, boppy number, albeit with her trademark dodgy lyrics. #1 looks assured.
There's a buzz behind the Super Furry Animals' Do Or Die that might put this thrash-lite number into the top 10. At just 1 minute 45, it's the shortest release in a very long time.
Old stagers making a return: Sting, with Desert Rose and David Bowie's Survive. Sting's looking for his fourth decade of hits, Bowie his fifth. Both will be looking for a 20something place.
Scanty Sandwich (who they) and Papa Mantra (who) also release something. I've never heard of either, so look for top 20 entries. The Brand New Heavies massacre Apparently Nothing, the Young Disciples classic, and will be lucky to make the top 40.

Santana's Supernatural album remains #1 on this week's US album chart, fending off Celine Dion's collection All The Way ... A Decade Of Song, which leaps two spots to #2. DMX's ... And Then There Was X holds at #3, while the compilation Now That's What I Call Music! 3 continues its climb up the chart to #4. Christina Aguilera's eponymous debut moves up one notch to #5. Eifell 65's Europop makes its top 10 bow, climbing 12-8.

At #23, Mark Wills' set Permanently is the chart's highest debut. Among other albums making significant moves this week are Filter's Title Of Record, which jumps 64-48; Charlotte Church's Voice Of An Angel, which moves 90-50; Macy Gray's On How Life Is, 66-54; and the soundtrack to The Sopranos, which rockets 126-87. The Reprise soundtrack to Magnolia, featuring Aimee Mann, is the chart's greatest gainer, leaping from #147 to #81. Other Brits in the top half include Charlotte Church, whose eponymous album storms 70-51; Sting's Brand New Day, 53-62; Bush's The Science Of Things, 71-80; Clapton Chronicles, 88-92; and Early Days: The Best of Led Zepplin, 98-100.

Over on the US Hot 100, Savage Garden's I Knew I Loved You wrests the top spot away from Christina Aguilera's What A Girl Wants. Positions 3-5 hold steady from last week, with Santana's Smooth at #3, Brian McKnight's Back At One at #4, and Blaque's Bring It All To Me at #5. The climb of Blue continues, 9-6, while Celine Dion's That's The Way It Is enters the top 10 at 8.
Filter's Take A Picture climbs 21-19; Blink-182's All The Small Things moves 35-26. Both songs should climb significantly next week, as commercial singles were released this week.
At #42, 'N Sync's new single Bye Bye Bye enjoys the chart's highest debut, while Third Eye Blind's Never Let You Go is the greatest gainer, with a 65-32 move. After 25 weeks, Amber's Sexual (Li Da Di) moves out of the clubs and into the feted 50, climbing 58-49.
UK DJ/producer/songwriter/remixer Sonique (a UK chart topper twelve years ago in S-Express) climbs 67-52 with It Feels So Good. Robbie's Angels slip 52-55.

Canadian talent tops the MuchMusic countdown, with Chocolair's Let's Ride taking over at the summit. Learn to Fly and Blue also climb one point apiece to top 3 places. The relentless climb of the Backstreet Boys continues, with Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely shooting 13-8. Big climbs also for Britney Spears (From the Bottom of my Broken Heart, 23-18) and Our Lady Peace (Is Anybody Home?, 25-19.) The highest entry is a remix of Jennifer Lopez's recent chart topper Waiting for Tonight, with Big Pun and Fat Joe - it lands at #24. Edwin's And You also debuts four places lower. The one British act is S Club 7, climbing four to 25 with S Club Party. Celine Dion's That's the Way It Is takes the lead on the MMM chart, with the Counting Crows Hanginaround also overtaking last week's leader, Enrique Iglesias. George Michael's Roxanne climbs 11-8, while Jewel returns to the top 10 - What's Simple is True moves 12-10. Tina Turner has a massive climb (When the Heartache is Over, 22-17) while Bryan Adams (Best of Me, 23-19) and Santana (Maria Maria, 24-20) keep pace. New entries for The Tea Party's The Messenger at #27, and Damhait Doyle's Tattooed at #29. Other UK acts: The Coors 17-13, Sting 20-16.

10[NEW] REM - The Great Beyond

Weekend 4: January 27-30

A full packet of new singles, and then some. Leading the pack is Gabrielle's Rise, featuring a sample of Zimmermann's Knockin' on Heaven's Door, a soulful vocal, gospel backing singers, and it's wonderful. A Top 3 entry looms.
I'm hoping for good things for Mint Royale's Don't Falter, featuring the vocal extensions of Lauren Laverne. Though Kenickie never received the attention that was their due, lead singer Laverne still has one of the sweetest and most glittery voices in pop. Top 5 if there's any justice.
Andreas Johnson is the great hope of his record company, who held Glorious off the pre-Christmas release roster for greater success in the new year. If you can imagine a slightly more bombastic version of Eagle-Eye Cherry, you'll not be too far wrong. Top 10, possibly higher.
Old stagers coming back this week include REM's The Great Beyond and the Eurythmics' Seventeen Again. REM is contributing to a movie soundtrack, the 'Mics from their comeback album. Both sound like they could have been made at any time in the past twenty years, and both should go top 20.
The Utah Saints are also back; Love Song is their first release since 1993. It sounds like all those vocoder hits the grannies of pop have been having for the past year or so. Their name recognition gives them a top 40 place, but progress beyond that might be limited.
A group that have never caught on in the UK is Live - The Dolphin's Cry would have changed that had it been released two weeks ago, or last week, but they'll probably miss the 40 again this week. A massive shame.
It's not big, and it's not clever. The Notorious BIG may have been killed three years ago, but that doesn't stop him from sampling Duran Duran's Notorious on his track of the same name. Simon le Bon would be turning in his grave, if he were dead. Meanwhile girly R&B group Fierce covers another late 86 classic, Anita Baker's Sweet Love. Like M-Beat's cover in 1994, there's an annoying drum beat behind the vocals that has no place there. Not Big will struggle to go top 30; Fierce is released on a record label owned by one of the radio giants, and should crack the 20.

An appearance by Anthony H. Wilson on Radio Five came to my attention this week. Anthony founded Factory Records in 1978, the label that was home to Joy Division and New Order throughout the 80s, and signed such stars as the Happy Mondays and Northside before folding in 1992. He's convinced that the greater British music scene is on a 13 year cycle, with the next explosion of guitar music scheduled for 2002. So, if we keep our ear to the ground, there should be something good real soon now.

Santana takes week three at the top of the Billboard album chart with Supernatural, while Celine Dion's All The Way holds in the runner-up spot. Dr Dre 2001 jumps from #7 to #3, while Christina Aguilera moves up one spot to #4. Eiffel 65's Europop climbs to #6, Jagged Edge's J.E. Heartbreak debuts at #8.
Enigma's The Screen Behind The Mirror enters at #33. Big climbs this week include Macy Gray's On How Life Is, which moves 54-32; Eminem's The Slim Shady LP, 73-54; the soundtrack to The Sopranos, 87-64; and Vertical Horizon's Everything You Want, leaping from #115 to #92 and exiting the Heatseekers list.
Three British acts on the list this week, led by Sting's set Brand New Day, 62-61. Charlotte Church goes 51-63 with her eponymous album, and 50-67 with Voice of an Angel. Bush's The Science of Things moves 80-77.

The Billboard Hot 100 is led by Savage Garden's I Knew I Loved You for a second week, with Christina Aguilera's What A Girl Wants remaining at #2, Santana's Smooth at #3, and Brian McKnight's Back At One at #4. Montell Jordan's Get It On Tonite got a sales release and climbs from #15 to #5. Eifell 65, Missy Elliot and Celine Dion all slip one spot, to 7, 8 and 9, but further climbs are expected; that's also the case for Destiny's Child and Lonestar - down three to 16 and 17, respectively. Filter's Take a Picture climbs 19-12, Blink-182's All the Small Things 26-15 after both received commercial releases. N-Sync's Bye Bye Bye storms 42-20 on airplay alone, and Joe's I Wanna Know climbs 33-41.
Big entries include Ricky Martin - Shake your Bonbon became available to buy, and rockets 91-28. Sonique becomes the first British act to make the top 50 this year, as It Feels So Good moves 52-30. D'Angelo goes 56-35 with How Does it Feel, Sugar Ray's Falls Apart leaps 54-40. Mark Wills has cut a country version of Back at One, and it moves 51-43. We await the country version of Blue (Da Ba Dee) with interest...

The Foo Fighters' Learn to Fly takes the MuchMusic Countdown top slot, with Blue also climbing to #2. Last time's topper, Let's Ride from Chocolair, slips to #3. Big climbers for Britney Spears' From the Bottom of my Broken Heart (18-12), the Matthew Good Band's Is Anybody Home? (19-13), and S Club 7's Bring It All Back (25-16). There are new entries for fellow Brits All Saints (Pure Shores, 27), Canada's Econoline Crush (You Don't Know What it's Like, 28) and the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Otherside, at 24.

Celine holds the MuchMoreMusic Countdown for a second week, holding off Hanginaround and Turn Your Lights Down Low, both climbing one place. George Michael's Roxanne moves 8-5, Sting's Desert Rose 16-14 and Santana's Maria Maria 20-16. New entries for Blue Rodeo (Somebody Waits, #25) and Third Eye Blind (Never Let You Go, #28).
