Bandleader and percussionist Tito Puente, who rode to fame on the heels of the 1950s mambo craze and for the next five decades helped define Latin jazz, has died. He was 77. Puente recorded more than 100 albums in his six decades in the business. In February, he won his fifth Grammy for best traditional tropical Latin performance for "Mambo Birdland." He received a National Medal of Arts from President Clinton in 1997. Puente played the timbales, a pair of single-headed drums mounted on stands. A flamboyant performer, he move them from the back of the band to the front and played standing up.
Artists who collaborated with him included Celia Cruz, Charlie Palmieri, Ray Barretto, Candido, Mongo Santamaria, Cal Tjader, Woody Herman, George Shearing, Lionel Hampton and Machito. Another was Carlos Santana, whose early hits include Puente's "Oye Como Va." Puente had been released from a Puerto Rico hospital May 2 after two days of treatment for an irregular heartbeat. He canceled all his events in May, including three concerts planned with the Symphonic Orchestra of Puerto Rico.
News broke that Janet Jackson is to get a divorce. This came as a surprise to a lot of people, not least because no-one knew she was married. This deception didn't extend to soon-to-be-ex-husband Rene Elizondo, who petitioned "irreconcilable differences" to end the nine year alliance. "We became more business and creative partners than actual lovers. We've been in negotiations for the past four to six months, and we decided to file for divorce and get this over with." Jackson's first marriage, to James DeBarge in 1985, collapsed within minutes and was later annulled.
Madonna joins Metallica, Dr Dre and other acts by threatening to sue Napster. Apparently, someone has leaked Madge's new single to the MP3 matching service, and the material girl is considering joining the queue to see them in court. Music specialists point out that the people downloading the file are the people who buy the most records and see the most concerts.
The first Dancestar Awards ended with Moby and Ministry of Sound each walking away with an armful of gongs. The Alexandra Palace event was organised by the creators of the MOBO's (Music Of Black Origin) and featured performances from DJ Luck & MC Neat, Alice Deejay, Artful Dodger, ATB, Fragma and Moby, who picked up the 'Dancestar' award plus the best album award for 'Play'.
The Ministry empire were voted best UK publication, best dance single (ATB for 9pm Til I Come), best compilation (Dance Nation 7) and best newcomer for ATB.
Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP scored the second best sales week since Billboard adopted SoundScan data in 1991. The album earns top spots on The Billboard 200 and Billlboard's R&B Albums chart with a staggering 1.76 million units sold. On The Billboard 200, it displaced Britney Spears' album Oops! ... I Did It Again, which sold 612,500 and slipped to #2.
Eminem's tally dropped Spears' album, which sold 1.3 million units the previous week, to the #3 spot on the list of best weekly sales performances in the SoundScan era. Both trail 'N Sync's No Strings Attached, which sold 2.4 million copies in its debut week in March. The previous record sales week for a rap album was Snoop Doggy Dogg's 1993 debut album, Doggystyle, with 803,000 units.
Also making strong debuts this week were matchbox twenty's album mad season by matchbox twenty, which entered at #3, with 365,000 sales; A Perfect Circle's debut Mer De Noms, #4, 188,000; and Don Henley's Inside Job, #7, 114,000.
Elsewhere in the top 10, 'N Sync's No Strings Attached fell one notch to #5; the soundtrack to Mission: Impossible: 2 held at #6; Whitney Houston's Whitney: The Greatest Hits dropped four spots to #9; and rappers Big Tymers' I Got That Work bounced from #3 to #10.
Notable debuts from country artist Lee Ann Womack's I Hope You Dance, which opened at #17 on The Billboard 200 and at #1 on Top Country Albums. R&B supergroup Lucy Pearl's self-titled debut premiered at #26, the Family Values Tour 1999 debuted at #32, and Gloria Estefan's Spanish-langauge album Alma Caribena-Caribbean Soul opened at #50.

Santana's Maria Maria featuring the Product G&B enjoyes a 10th week at #1 on the Hot 100. The top 10 is largely unchanged, with the only new entries coming from Eminem's The Real Slim Shady leaping from #11 to #7, and the title track from Spears' new album, up from #12 to #9.
'N Sync's It's Gonna Be Me was the fastest growing track at radio for the second straight week, while rapper Nelly's (Hot Shit) Country Grammar was the fastest growing track at retail, as it jumped from #37 to #24.

#4 - Billie Piper: day and night [as last week] #3 - Bon Jovi: it's my life [utterly bombastic, wonderful] #10 - Sia: taken for granted [drapes in the backdrop, a prowling prescence, but doesn't quite work] #15 - Belle and Sebastian: legal man [works better than i could have expected, with three singers round one mike] #32 - Hybrid & Chrissie Hynde: kid [they're only on because chrissie could make the tape. not on the song's quality] pre - Travis: comin' around again [recorded at the madia vale radio studios, which just happen to have a massive totp logo around. band is artily placed, and looks ok.] #2 - S Club 7: reach [preposterously stupid choreography, but a bouncy enough number.] #1 - Sonique: it feels so good [the one live vocal, but not showing the song in its best light. a little strained, a little bizarre.]
Bon Jovi tops the UK Album Charts; their Crush album is the fifth straight chart-topper in a run stretching back to 1988. Whitney and Eminem both slip a place; Tom Jones holds to #4 as Britney drops two to #5. Iron Maiden records their 20th top 10 album in 20 years, but their first since 1995, as Brave New World enters at #7. Simply Red's Greatest Hits rebounds 26-10 as the album is deeply discounted in sales.
Heather Small's Proud can only make #12, Lynden David Hall's The Other Side bows at #36, two places ahead of Armand Van Helden's Killing Puritans. Bentley Rhythm Ace bows at #48 with For Your Ears Only, NOFX Pump Up the Valium at #50, Billy Bragg & Wilco's Mermaid Avenue Volume 2 #61, and Kid Rock's The History Of Rock #73.
Ignoring the catalogue climbers, gains for David Gray White Ladder 23-16, Hans Zimmer Gladiator OST 27-17, Doves Lost Souls re-enters at #59, as does Muse Showbiz at #69. Pink's album Can't Take Me Home sets some form of record, its chart run has now been 75-75-75.

Another bum rap for Marshall Mathers, the rapper otherwise known as Eminem. He's been nicked in Detroit on weapons charges after an altercation with a barman, bailed, and freed on bail. He's also been charged with pointing a gun at a member of punk rockers Insane Clown Posse. If convicted of all three charges, we're looking at seven to nine years with Slim in chokey. Still no word of legal action over his unamusing lyrics.
Lonestar's award-winning chart-topping hit, Amazed, was voted the #1 love song of all time by 143,000 people polled over the course of a month. Other top vote-getters in the self-selecting online poll include Unchained Melody by Jimmy Young, the Righteous Brothers, Greene & Flynn and others at #2, (Everything I Do) I Do It For You by Bryan Adams and the Fatima Mansions at #3, I Will Always Love You by Dolly Parton and Whitney Houston at #4, My Heart Will Go On, by Celine Dion at #5.
Some saddo offers top popstrel Birtney's Pears $17 million for a night of rumpo. The top selling solo act of the last ten minutes told the un-named whore exactly where to sling his hook. Pears, whose greatest ambition is to be mentioned in the same sentence as Barbra Streisand without relying on a similar sounding song, is waiting till she's married or tastes Cory's grilled cheese. Maybe his ardour will have been cooled by confirmation that the red PVC suit featured in the video to "Oops I" contained plastic inserts. Without them, anything looks flat. Even after the knee op.
Mariah Carey threatens to leave Sony records after her contract expires with release of her next album. She might join Arista, home to Cantsing's career model Whitney Houston.
Westlife splits from their "manager" Ronan Cheating. The former Boyzone frontman was touted as the group's mentor, though his involvement in their success was dubious at best. The Irish fivesome will now officially be managed by Ronan's manager.
Despite a 55% drop from its debut week, Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP continues to rack up big numbers, selling 794,000 and remaining #1 on The Billboard 200 for a second week. It holds off a charge by Kid Rock, whose The History Of Rock enters at #2, on 456,500 sales.
Britney Spears' Oops I Did It Again and mad season by matchbox twenty each drop one notch from last week, to #3 and #4 respectively. 'N Sync's No Strings Attached holds at #5, while the soundtrack to Mission: Impossible: 2 remains at #6. Creed's Human Clay slips up one to #7, Santana's Supernatural rockets back into the top 10 from #12 to #8, as does Sisqo's Unleash The Dragon, which jumps from #11 to #9.
Other debuts this week include the various artists compilation Totally Hits 2 at #14; metal stalwarts Iron Maiden's Brave New World at #39; the soundtrack to Big Momma's House at #51; Boney James/Rick Braun's Shake It Up at #78; Billy Bragg and Wilco's Mermaid Avenue Volume 2 at #88; and Lara Fabian's self-titled album at #101.
The Hot 100 sees its most active week in some time, as Aaliyah's Try Again finally bumps Santana's Maria Maria from the top of the chart where it had sat for 10 weeks. Try Again becomes the first cut ever to reach #1 without a commercial release, while Maria Maria plummets to #8.
Faith Hill's Breathe climbs two spots to #2, while Vertical Horizon's modern rock mainstay Everything You Want jumps from #8 to #3, showing the largest growth at radio.
Janet Jackson's Doesn't Really Matter, the first single from the forthcoming soundtrack to The Nutty Professor II, is this week's top debut at #59, while Westlife's Swear It Again is the fastest growing single at retail.
Two of the duets from Whitney Houston's greatest hits package "Whitney: The Greatest Hits" debut on the chart. Same Script, Different Cast, a duet with Deborah Cox, opens at #71, while Could I Have The Kiss Forever, a pairing with Enrique Iglesias, bows at #74.

It's reverse gear for the UK Album Charts as last week's top four reverse their positions for this week. Tom Jones' Reload returns to the top spot, ahead of Eminem's Marshall Mathers LP. A radio station's attempt to generate excitement by faking an appearance by Britney Spears ended when a woman in a crowd at the station collapsed. She died later at a hospital. Investigators said that, after a purported interview with Spears on Tuesday night, a woman pretending to be Spears emerged from the station to get into a limousine. About 100 people had gathered to greet her. A man who identified himself as the station manager but declined to give his name said he was "just trying to focus on the woman." "We're trying to figure out what happened," he said, declining further comment.
Rapper Eminem remained atop The Billboard 200 for the third straight week, as The Marshall Mathers LP moved 600,000 copies. Eminem was charged with felonious assault and possession of a concealed weapon in two separate incidents in the Detroit area during this sales week. Britney Spears' Oops! ... I Did It Again sold 369,700 units and returned from #3 to #2, swapping with Kid Rock's The History Of Rock, which sold 247,650 copies.
The top 10 remains largely unchanged this week, with the only new entry coming from Joe's album My Name Is Joe, which rebounded from #13 to #10. The Better Life, the latest from 3 Doors Down, is gaining fast, as it jumped from #19 to #11.
