Who has the single out? The lead on a top-selling tabloid Wednesday was "Robbie And Geri Dating." Geri Halibut, the former Spice Girl, is promoting her autobiography. Robot Williams, erstwhile Take Thatter, is involved in a one-horse race for the #1 UK single this week. There's utterly no substance to the story, apart from the salient fact that both Williams and Halibut are both part of the EMI corp.
Duran Duran is facing a lawsuit, after an error on their website led to almost three fans calling a private citizen in San Fransisco. The chap who took the calls is now suing the British group for daring to suggest he remembered them from first time round.
The Birtney Backlash begins, as some woman claims the Spears Posse got nasty after she took pictures of the PVC-chested one getting aggressive while drunk. "It's all tosh," claims Camp Spears, "she's just out for the publicity." Meanwhile public boyfriend Justin Timberlake denies that the pair are engaged. Justin doesn't cook good grilled cheese.
Prosecutors have reduced the assault charge against country singer Tim McGraw from a felony to a misdemeanour. McGraw, singer Kenny Chesney and McGraw's manager are accused of scuffling with authorities during the George Strait Country Music Festival in June after Chesney allegedly took an unauthorized ride on a police horse. All three face potential jail terms of up to a year when the case goes to trial Dec 7. All three have denied any wrongdoing and say Chesney had permission to ride the horse.
NOW 4 holds for a second week at #1 in the US, selling more than 258,000 copies in its second week of release, holding off Birtney Spears' Oops! ... I Did It Again, which moved nearly 243,000.
'N Sync's No Strings Attached showed the highest percentage gain in sales, and rose from #7 to #5. No Strings Attached has moved more than 7 million in the US to date. The top 10 of the album chart has only one entry, as BB King and Eric Clapton's Riding With The King moves up one notch from #11 to return to the 10. Riding is #1 on Billboard's Top Internet Album Sales chart for the fourth consecutive week.
Top debut came from modern rock act Eve 6's Horrorscope at #34. The various artists compilation Monsters Of Rap opened at #52, with country artist Aaron Tippin's People Like Us right behind at #53.
On The Hot 100, Sisqo's Incomplete completes its forward motion, taking the #1 slot on the heels of a 55-2 jump last week. Incomplete bumped last week's #1, 'N Sync's It's Gonna Be Me, to #3.
Madonna's Music - the first single from her forthcoming album of the same name - was this week's top debut, bowing at #41 on airplay alone. Birtney's latest single, Lucky, debuted at #61, while Bon Jovi's It's My Life opened at #64, marking the veteran rock band's first Hot 100 appearance since Lie To Me/Something For The Pain in December 1995.
Toni Braxton's Just Be A Man About It was the fastest-growing track at radio, jumping from #69 to #51. LFO's West Side Story was the top mover at retail, and enjoyed a 96-84 climb.
The Hot Country Singles chart has a new #1, as Lonestar's What About Now bumped Lee Ann Womack's I Hope You Dance featuring Sons Of The Desert from the top of the tally.
New at #1 on Modern Rock is the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Californication, the third MR chart-topper from the album of the same name. The track is #4 with a bullet on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Tracks survey this week, while the album -- which has sold more than 3.5 million copies -- is at #17 on its 60th week.

TOTP
Richard Blackwood is this week's presenter. Why?
#38 (!) Macy Gray - why didn't you call me repeat of the pre-release, and the lowest placed track to make the show in many years. #2 - Bomfunk MCs - freestyler on the video wall, with some pretty pointless dancers taking centre stage. the band looks decently rehearsed without them. faded out half way through. they deserve better, frankly. #6 - Santana / Product G&B - maria maria except it's neither product g nor &b. vocals provided by the same loons who appeared on smooth on this show. it's a vastly inferior product, and only shown in a misguided attempt to "preserve" the totp brand. it's diluted by tricks like this. recorded on a special stage in (i think) feb. #13 - Samantha Mumba - gotta tell you on the floor in the middle of the studio. has she learned dancing in the last few weeks? of course not. and the singing is atrocious. #14 - Point Break - you on the diamond stage, white lit. the guys look stunning in black, and their dancing is decent. so how come they're not *huge* stars yet? #21 - Moloko - pure pleasure seeker it's not a repeat from two weeks ago, but it may as well be. the singer's in a gold suit. pre - Janet Jackson - doesn't really matter taped in the us, on a purple stage, which sets off her outfit brilliantly. the performance is identikit janet. #1 - Craig David - fill me in out on the video wall, covered up. gods, he's dull.
Ronan Keating sparks change atop the album chart, as his debut Ronan enters at #1. Last week's top six - Corrs, Eminem, Coldplay, David Gray, Moby, Whitney - all fall one spot. Britney (11-8) and Savage Garden (15-9) return to the top ten, with S Club 7 anchoring that section.
Louise's third album falls short of expectations, with Elbow Beach only able to enter at #12. There are big climbs for Californication 27-17, ABBA Gold 37-29, but Robbie's 1998 release I've Been Expecting You 56-43 is the greatest gainer.
There are two other debut, the Shadows Fifty Golden Greats at #35, and David Gray Lost Songs 95-98 at #55, with N'Sync No Strings Attached re-entering the 75 at #48.
...hot hits... 1 [43]Robbie Williams - rock dj it's the theme to chorlton and the wheelies! and the young mc's "busta move"! rip-off yer skin city! 2 [1] Craig David - seven days 3 [4] Bomfunk MCs - freestyler 4 [3] Ronan Keating: life is a rollercoaster 5 [2] Eminem: the real slim shady 6 [6] Destiny's Child: jumpin jumpin 7 [8] Corrs: breathless [week 3] 8 [7] Aaliyah: try again 9 [5] Five & Queen: we will rock you 10[9] Santana / Product G&B - maria maria also... 12 Storm - time to burn the act formerly known as jam & spoon 22 Mansun - i can only disappoint you almost, maybe. 30 Wookie - battle cover of soul ii soul 41 M J Cole - sincere re-released for no decent reason
Country #1 Of The Week:
What About Now - Lonestar
Sorry, Randi, but just when you thought it was safe to come out of the cupboard, here comes your favourite group ever (: Their new tune is a funky little upbeat number, nothing like as slow as Amazed. While it might not be the ultra-classic of the last release, it's most certainly another classy number. With its zip and pace, it might also break the group to pop radio in the UK, paving a way for a re-release of "Amazed."
Album "Lonely Grill" out now.
Soundalike Of The Week #2:
Breathless - Corrs
Yeah, yeah, we all know the connection with Mutt Lange (aka Mr Shania Twain.) But this sounds nothing like his work with Bryan Adams or Def Leppard. No, compare the bridge of this track with the bridge to Belinda Carlisle's 1990 hit We Want The Same Thing. It's awfully similar.
Single out across Europe, album "In Blue" also.
Belinda's album "Runaway Horses" released 1989.
Soundalike Of The Week #1:
Rock DJ - Robbie Williams
Never mind the chorus, listen to the verse. And how it's exactly the theme to seminal 70s Cosgrove Hall animation Chorlton And the Wheelies. Is this really part of the fun of Wheelie World? Rice / Anderson / Ulvaeus may not think so, the way the verse *also* rips off Murray Head's One Night In Bangkok.
Single out now, album September.
Theme to "Chorlton And the Wheelies" is out there...
"Chess" soundtrack released 1984.
Soundalike Of The Week #3:
My Name Is... - Eminem
Always first with the hot new talent (sorry, that's next week.) No, Mathers' breakthrough hit owes a lot to a Labi Siffre session from 1987, one that turned into his minor hit "Something Inside So Strong." The piano on the original session, but not the single, was played by top cockney pub singers Chas & Dave. We await Dr Dre's remake of "Rabbit" with interest.
"The Slim Shady LP" released 1999.
"Something Inside So Strong" not available at present.
"The Best Of Chas & Dave" in the bargain bin since 1995.
