QUESTION: Who is Sarah Jane Wrightington b 1835 who married Robert Shurtleff?
Answer provided by Hal Shurtleff via email 2/12/2000: Sarah was the niece of Thomas Wrightington who married Mary Jane Burt. She was the daughter of Asa Wrightington and Jane White. Asa was the son of Benjamin and Mary(savery) Wrightington. Asa and Mary had three daughters: Sarah, Mary F and Elizabeth. Sarah was born July 14 1835 died Oct 25 1851 - age 16! Robert was b May 29 1827 and died Aug 15 1850 in Lynnfield MA age 23. They had one son: Robert Shurtleff who was raised by the Morse family of Carver. Mabel Shurtleff married Joseph Wrightington - they are buried in Lakenham Cemetery across from Robert.
Wed, 25 Nov 1998 From: "Richard W. Griffith"To: Anne McLaughlin Subject: Re: Wrightington Family - From the published Rochester vital records ["Vital Records of Rochester Massachusetts to the Year 1850" (Boston, MA: NewEngland Historic Genealogical Society, 1914)], and found in Vol. 1 p.317, children of Thomas and Hannah Wrightington: Thomas William, b. 24 June 1829, and Hannah Bradford, b. 13 Mar. 1832. Also listed was a birth for Thomas, husband of Hannah, b. 20 Jan. 1801. This Thomas W. seemed like a good candidate for your Thomas, so I couldn't let go of it after that! In the 1850 Federal Census for Carver, Plymouth Co., p.192, there is:
- Thomas Writhington (sic) age 40 (sic) Iron Worker, real estate @ $800
- Hannah, age 55
- Thomas W., age 21, Iron Worker
- Hannah B., age 17
- and a Celia Whiting, age 90
- All were born in Mass.
This is definitely the same family in spite of the discrepancy in Thomas Sr.'s age, and shows that they lived in Carver by 1850, despite the fact that their children's births are recorded in Rochester. At the New Bedford public library: from microfilm copies of Massachusetts vital records 1841 to 1900:
- Hannah Wrightington died in Carver 5 April 1860, age 71y 5m 5d
her birthplace given as Rochester; her father's name as Joseph Morse (Mass. VR Book 139 p. 289).- Thomas Wrightington died in Carver 19 June 1875, age 73y 5m;
- his birthplace is given as Carver, and his father's name as Benjamin (Mass.VR Book 275 p. 299).
There was no death record for Thomas W.
MARRIAGE RECORD
On July 3 1861, in Carver, by Rev. S. Y. Wallace, pastor of the 1st M.P. Church in Carver
were married Thomas Wrightington, of Carver, age 58, Iron miller, born Carver, son of Benjamin and Mary (Savery), 2nd marriage
and Mary Jane Burt of Fall River, age 23, born Fall River,
dau. of George L. and Harriet H. (Goff), 1st marriage (Mass. VR Book 145 p. 238)
In spite of the slightly understated age of Thomas, it was the father of Thomas W. who is the one you want!
A duplicate record was filed in Fall River, which is the same except that Thomas' age is given as 62, and his mother's name as Sarah, for some reason (Mass. VR Book 144 p. 80).This is confirmed by the 1870 Federal Census of Carver, Plymouth Co., p. 176 (Carver p. 23), which shows
- Thomas Wrightington, age 68, Works in Iron Foundry, Real Estate @ $700
- Mary J., age 31, keeping house
- Charles E., age 9, attending school;
- Helen A., age 7, attending school
- Rufus, age 6 1/2, at home, born November [1869]. All were born in Mass.
Now we can go to the Carver published vital records ["Vital Records of Carver Massachusetts to the Year 1850" (Boston, MA: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 1911)] where we find, on p. 80, among the
children of Benjamin and Mary, Thomas, b. 20 Jan. 1802 (one year off from the Rochester notation above).
On p. 179, there is a death record for Benjamin, laborer, died 2 Nov. 1848, age 79, born Middleborough,
father's name Thomas, "in perfect health one hour before his Death".
On p. 121, there is the marriage intentions of Benjamin "Ridinton" and Mary Savery of Wareham, 10 April 1794.Checking the Wareham vital records abstracts which I did in 1996:
Marriage intentions of Benjamin "Ridington" of Carver and Mary Savery of Wareham, 12 April 1794 (from Vol. 1 p. 252)
The marriage of same 22 June 1794, by the Rev. Noble Everett [First Congregational Church] (from Vol. 1 p. 302).The published Middleborough vital records do not have anything on him, nor do Carver, Rochester, or Plympton (both "R" and "W" spellings checked).
However, the Savery line is given in the published Savery genealogy
(a secondary source, so don't take it as "Gospel")
[A.W. Savary M.A. and Miss Lydia A. Savary.
A Genealogical and Biographical Record of the Savery Families and the Severy Family
(Boston, MA: The Collins Press, 1893)].
On p. 32, is shown Mary, dau. of Thomas (Uriah-Thomas-Samuel-Thomas) and Elizabeth (Randall) Savery, b. 20 April 1771;
m. 22 June 1794, Benjamin "Writington".
Thomas Savery was bornprob. Wareham 26 Aug. 1739
[confirmed in Wareham VR from Vol. 1 p. 266]
m. 31 Mar. 1766, Elizabeth Randall of Rochester; she died April 1839.
Here is a slight error, as the Wareham VR show intentions on 18 June 1768
and the marriage on 31 July 1768, by the Rev. Rowland Thatcher [First Cong. Ch.]
(Vol. 1 pp. 280 and 295, respectively).
This is also the date given in the published Rochester vital records (see above) Vol.2 p. 266.Continuing in the Savery genealogy, p. 31,
Uriah Savery was born 30 April 1708; m. 3 Sept. 1738, Deborah
dau. of Isaac Bumpus of Rochesterand Mary (Perry) Bumpus.
Deborah was born 31 Aug. 1712.
Isaac Bumpus is given as the son of John
grandson of the immigrant EdwardBumpus.
Mary Perry is given as the dau. of Ezra of Sandwich.
This marriage is shown in the published Rochester VR, (Vol. 2 p. 266).
Deborah Bumpus' birth is also given in Rochester
(Vol. 1 p. 63), with the year as 1713.
( One of my ancestors is Samuel Savery, brother of Uriah,
both sons of Thomas and Esther (Saunderson) Savery.
Some of the dates are verifiable in the published Plymouth vital records.
Some of the other lines can be carried back further without too much effort.
For example, see "EzraPerry of Sandwich Mass."
by Lydia B. (Phinney) Brownson and Maclean W.McLean
in New England Historical and Genealogical Register [NEHGR], Vol.115 [1961] pp. 86-93.
There is another article by the same authors,
"Henry Sanders, alias Sanderson, of Sandwich Mass."
in NEHGR 127 [1973]pp. 250-252.CONNECT TO OTHER NAMES HERE RI ROOTS
