This stone stands on a hill, under a tree, next to his wife Elizabeth, at the Smellage Cemetery in Boma, Putnam, Tennessee. As you can see Aden's didn't fare to well and the new stone was laid.
The land this cemetery lays on is said to be the Aden's and Elizabeth's front yard and that the first grave, so marked by a marker, is of their youngest daughter Margaret E., born March 6, 1861, died July 3, 1864. My research has not found the cause of her death, nor whether there was an epidemic at this time.
At this time my information on this man is limited to census', family lore and a collection of research by a group of descendent's efforts and sharing. |

What is known of Aden is that his first name is also spelled Aiden and Adin, that he will also be found under the last name of Handley, Henly, Henley, Hendley. His middle name has been determined to be Smith, and as of yet we do not now where or if this name originated as a " family" name.
Aden Smith Hendley was born July 14, 1812 in Georgia, to Joel Hendley and Mary Horne(e),one of 4 known brothers. The year of his migration to Tennessee with his family is not known, and this researchers info is more of Aiden's & Elizabeth's family and travels.
He married Elizabeth Jane Gentry, June 18, 1835 in Jackson County, Tennessee. It's my believe that Joel Hendley, father of the groom, possibly preformed this marriage at the Hebron Baptist Church in Jackson County, TN.
Aden and Elizabeth had 12 children over a 27 year period. Their family Bible list their children's names and birthdates. Click on Bible |
