arah Frances Mayfield

John Clinton Herrin
marr: 1856
Lewis Maynor
Is Mayfield her real surname? That is the biggest and foremost question we have on this elusive grandmother. In the beginning of this research her maiden name was given to us as Mayfield but pursuing this name has not netted any information or come up with a family for her in the Mayfield's of the surrounding where we find Clinton and his family.

Finding her second marriage has answered many questions, given us new leads and lines to follow and of course more questions.

In a land deed document she shows to be married to one Lewis Maynor. Is this a true spelling or an error that might mean Maynard? A Lewis Maynard has been found in the 1850 census, that might be him. Subsequent records do not show him and Sarah is living as a housekeeper in others homes. What happened to Lewis to make this couple not be together within 4 years? The Maynard name intermarries the Herrins and several other lateral lines.

In a ducument of 1909 Lucy J. Barnes makes a declaration before the court that she is " one of four children " of Clinton and Sarah Herrin. We know that Lucy stayed with her mother and the boys, Pinkney and Timothy, were indentured after Clinton's death, but the fourth child is news. A Dolly Herin found in the 1860 census is being looked at as this child. She shows to be the right age to be of these siblings. The name Dolly could be a very important clue for Herrin researchers of any spelling. I have found it in many of the earlier lines of the variant spellings.

Did Sarah maintain contact with her fostered three children? So far evidence doesn't show it and I don't remember my grandfather ever referring to her in any manner. Was there no connection before Timothy and his family left Tennessee or was it lost after they left?
