John Clinton is as much a mystery as his father, if indeed Richard was his father, not his grandfather. The possibility of him being the son of James, going to live with his grandparents at the time of his parents deaths, has been brought forward. Another mystery |

It is estimated John Clinton and Sarah Frances married in 1848, or 1849, Putnam or Dekalb County, Tennessee. Legend says their first child, Pinkney, was born in December, making it possible they married in the early months of 1849.
1849 is also the year John Clinton reached the age of majority and became a landowner. A deed recorded in Chancery Court, dated Oct. 8, 1849, shows Richard Herrin transfered 113 acres to Clinton Herrin for the consideration of $100.00 to be paid in six month time. This property lay " in the state of Tennessee, County of Dekalb and District No. 8" |
