This lap-sized quilt started out to be a banner for the La Costa Canyon wrestling team (my DS is into sports - football, wrestling, and track), but I didn't get very far into the making before I decided it wasn't going to be suitable for that purpose. So I decided to make this into a quilt and to make a separate banner with a similar design but different fabric (satin instead of cotton - completed and presented to the team in Dec 1998).
This is really a cheater quilt of sorts, because the letters were stuck to the fabric with stitch-witchery type stuff (you know, the stuff you iron on one side of your fabric, cut out, remove the paper and iron onto the other fabric). It was my first experience with this type of product, but I learned quickly (simple things like mirror imaging the letters so they come out correctly in the end!) and would use it again if I needed. I zig-zagged around the edges of the letters, and then quilted in this quick pattern so that I didn't have to do anything straight or even. The quilt was presented to the head coach, Duane Buth, at the wrestling awards dinner in March 1999 at the end of his first season as head coach.
Now I have to come up with something different for this season - maybe make something while I'm sitting at all those long tournaments!
