"Flying Squares"
This is one of my works in process - a new quilt to fit the CA king bed with double pillow top mattress that nothing else fits. I started this scrap quilt in January 1998. I wanted all of the colors on the color wheel in the quilt, and to use no more than 3-4 pieces of any given fabric so that there would be a lot of variety in the top. Little did I know when I started that I would have to purchase a lot of fabric to accomplish that goal (it would have been much more without the help of swaps). Anyway, I finished the top in September '98, and it is waiting for me to make a 3-rail quilting frame from a kit I bought (I have all the wood/poles/pieces, just waiting on vacation time to do the cutting/sanding/staining/varnishing and assembling!).
The quilt is really much more vibrant in color than these pictures come across - a real rainbow of colors. I have a Hobbs 80/20 cotton batting and a backing which looks like a musical score (black with white notes that I purchased (18 yds for $21) when a House of Fabrics store was going out of business in a neighboring town). I plan to hand quilt it in a pattern that I haven't yet determined.
You can see that the quilt will be more than large enough for anything I might ever want to use it for - that is my 6' tall son in the one corner, standing on the 2nd flour of our home with the phone attached to his head. It seems that the desired size of my quilts are often just that, and they are whatever size they end up!
