DEBBIE: In the midst of my cucumbers last summer, I discovered a canteloupe growing! Having never planted them, I wondered how to tell when it is ready to pick. I have been told that when the stem cracks at the melon, it is ready. Seeds from last year's compost gave me this pleasant surprise!

DEBBIE: Lorraine and I both planted the "Friendship Flower" seeds, two years in a row. The first year, Lorraine's did not grow, but mine did. However, (GRRRRRRR) some neighborhood cats found my lovely planting spot and decided to use the soil as a kitty litter box. So needless to say, I did not get the promised wonderful fragrance these gorgeous flowers offered. I tried a variety of things to deter them, including pepper, and what I found is that cats hate CITRUS. Put your orange peels and rotting lemons and oranges around the base of the plants the cats are after and they'll stay away! I still have some "Friendship Flower" seeds left and we're both going to try again!
