Family History
Grinnell's were in America in the early years of it's settlement. Matthew Greenell was born in Switzerland and died before 1643 in Newport, Rhode Island. He probably came from England around 1635 but that is yet undocumented. Two of his grandsons married granddaughters of Mayflower arrivals: Abigail Ford, Jonathan Grinnell's second wife, was the granddaughter of R. Warren of the Mayflower. Lydia Pabodie, Daniel Grinnell's wife, was a granddaughter of John Alden of the Mayflower.
The Altman family came from Ennenda, Switzerland between 1855 and 1928. Three brothers, Jost, Heinrich and Jakob left Switzerland and settled in Monroe, Wisconsin.

His family moved to Elizabeth Island when he was young and in 1758 returned to the mainland at Tiverton, where he was a weaver by trade. Two wedding dates are listed for him which is probably the date of their intentions and their wedding. Nathaniel served in the Revolution as a Private in Capt. Daniel Vaughn's Company of the Rhode Island Militia (24 Dec 1777 to 24 Feb 1788). It is said that he had bad feet, but was able to ride a horse.
In 1790, Nathaniel and his son, Gideon (1767) are shown as living in Berkshire Co., (Richmond) Massachusetts. A deed of sale in Tiverton, dated 1780, makes it appear that they moved about that time.
