John died in March 1720 in Somerset, Maryland.
His wife was still living at the time. Her exacte date of death
is unknown.
John Broughton was born in December 1688 in Stepney Parish, Somerset Maryland to John and Elizabeth Bradshaw Broughton. John (Jr) would marry twice and have children from both marriages. His first wife was Derby Riggan. Their only child was a daughter by the name of Jemima Broughton. John's second marriage was around 1712 to Mary Perkins. Together they would have three children born around the year 1715. The children were named:
John lived until 1755 when he passed away in February of that year.
Bruff Broughton was born in December 1690 in Stepney Parish, Somerset, Maryland to John and Elizabeth Bradshaw Broughton. Bruff married a woman be the name of Hannah (maiden name unknown) and have two children. The first was a son named Charles Broughton born February 1746 in Coventry Parish, Maryland. The second was a daughter named Mary Broughton born March 1748. Bruff Broughton would apparently not live to see the birth of his second child. He died in January 1748 in Somerset.
There was a very interesting turn of events involving the marriages of Bruff's two children. Charles Broughton married Elizabeth Shain (Shane) Hart, the daughter of Francis Shane in January 1772 in Westmoreland County Pennsylvania. Together the couple would have three children whom they named:
The irony of the marriage is that Elizabeth had been married before to man named Henry Hart with whom she had no children. Like his first wife Elizabeth, Henry too would remarry - this time to his ex-wife's sister-in-law, Mary Broughton.
That's right! About 1773, in Westmoreland County Pensylvania, Charles Broughton's sister, Mary Broughton wed Henry Hart, (born ca.1750, Rockingham County, Virginia) son of Miles H. Hart and Delilah Burris. Henry and Mary Broughton Hart would have six children:
Mary Broughton Hart died sometime around 1785 in Fayette County Pennsylvania. Her husband would head west into Kentucky where he married a third time in 1807 to Dolly Colby. Henry died in June 1815 in Bullitt, Kentucky.
Mary's brother Charles Broughton would also head west and settle in Kentucky where he died around 1788 in Nelson County.
Charles Broughton Jr. was born around 1773
to Charles and Elizabeth Shain Broughton. He married Hanna
Hynes, daughter of Thomas Hynes in January 1793 in Jefferson
City, Kentucky. In 1795, the couple had a son they named John
Broughton. John would eventually have a son of his own whom
he was also name John. For the purpose of clarity, we'll refer
to John's son (Charles' grandson) as John II. John Broughton
II was born in 1854 in Alabama. He married Arrinda Lawhon
and moved to Texas where in 1880 his son, Charles Broughton
(III) was born. John II apparently named his son after his
own grandfather and great-garndfather, both of whom were named
Charles.
Mary Broughton was born to Charles and Elizabeth Shain Broughton around 1773. Like her brother, Charles, she would marry and head west into Kentucky. Her husband was named William Shain (Chain). Together they would have 11 children before his death in 1821 and hers in July 1825 in Bullitt, Kentucky.
Nancy Broughton was also the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth Shain Broughton and was also born around the mid 1770's (ca.1773) Like her sister, she too would marry a man whose last name was Shain. Francis Shain and his wife Nancy had one known daughter whom they named Mary (possibly after Nancy's sister). Francis died in 1850 and Nancy death is believed to be around that same time.
