1. In what country & what century
was the Broughton Castle built? England: In the 13th Century
around the year 1242 John de Broughton was the owner of the Castle
which is now owned by Lord and Lady Saye and Sele.
2. The name Broughton is believed
to be originally derived from the Saxon words, "Broc"
and "Tun." What do these two words mean? Broctun
means a town or dwelling near a brook or broken land.
3. There are two large islands that
bear the Broughton name, one's inhabited by more than 500 people
& the other is a popular spot for nature-loving tourists
and fishermen. Can you name the two countries to which the islands
belong? Canada and Australia
4. Christopher Columbus became famous
for "discovering the New World." But there was another
New World explorer named Broughton who discovered a few things
too. Can you tell us his full name and what he's given credit
for finding? William Broughton: In 1790s Lt . Broughton captained
the ship Chatham on a British exploration of the northwest coast
of North America under the command of Capt.George Vancouver.
Broughton discovered the Chatham Islands off New Zealand as well
as Mount Hood in what is now the state of Oregon.
5. There once was a Broughton who
served as a Lt. Governor of one of the 50 United States. Can
you name him (his first name that it, since we all know his surname
:) & the state? Thomas Broughton was the Lt. Gov. of South
Carolina in the early 1700s.
6. During the Reconstruction Era
following the Civil War, a former-Confederate officer named Colonel
Edward Thomas Broughton ran for and was elected to serve as a
State Senator. Can you name the state? Texas: He served in
both the 12th and 13th Legislature in 1870 and 1871.
7. During World War II, military
leaders of the Allied Forces were in Britain. One leader was
US General Dwight D. Eisenhower. All of this is true. Is the
next statement true too? Eisenhower's headquarters was located
in a home owned by a Broughton family. True: Doddington Hall
still belongs to the Delves Broughton family.
8. During the Vietnam War, US Colonel
Jack Broughton was court-martialed for destroying evidence in
an effort to protect two men under his command who bombed a target
they weren't supposed to.
He later told his story and became a famous author. Can you name
his book(s)? He wrote both Thud Ridge and Going Downtown.
9. Lord Erroll, a British nobleman,
was killed in Kenya in 1941. His death had one titled Broughton
facing a murder trial, for which he was acquitted, and a scandal
which led to his suicide, and later a book and movie titled "White
Mischief." His name was? Sir Jock Delves Broughton: He
was the 11th Baronett of Doddington.
10. This famous Emmy-award-winning
composer wrote the score for such films as "Lost In Space,"
"Tombstone," "Miracle on 34th Street," "The
Presidio," "Harry and the Hendersons," the western
"Silverado," which brought him an Oscar nomination
and Disney's "The Rescuers Down Under." His name is?
Bruce Broughton: He also wrote scores for TV shows like JAG
and Dallas.
