After raising their 3 children
in the Palestine/Elkhart area, Walter LaRoy, a retired railroad-engineer,
and his wife bought a large ranch next to their daughter and
son-in-law in Ben Wheeler, Texas. Olabel grew vegetables, kept
house and hand-stitched quilts while Walter LaRoy raised cattle
and horses - and HUGE catfish in one of
two ponds on the property - for which at least one granddaughter's
tummy was extremely greatful! J For many years, visitors to the Broughton
spread would pass under the arch over the drive which held the
Rocking B, the brand found on Broughton's cattle. In the
late 1980's, the couple sold the ranch and moved closer to their
hometown of Palestine where, at the age of 87, W.L. Broughton
still raises quarter horses and Olabel still tends her flowers
in the flower beds. |
