Passenger List for the Ship Appollo, April 28, 1840

On April 28, 1840, the ship Appollo arrived in the port of New Orleans, Louisiana after a voyage from Le Havre in France.  Aboard were 52 passengers bound for the United States, most of them immigrants from France and Germany.  The largest single group on board was five families (24 people) from the neighboring towns of Hannonville-sous-les-Côtes and Herbeuville in the Department of the Meuse (part of the old region of Lorraine) in France.  They were all headed for Darke County, Ohio, located northwest of Cincinnati, near the Ohio-Indiana state line.  There was already a significant French immigrant community in Darke County, many of them from the same region in Lorraine.

Reproduced below is a transcript of the complete handwritten passenger list presented by the ship's captain to port authorities upon the arrival of the ship.  The handwriting is sometimes hard to read, so I made my best guess on some names.  I transcribed the list from Family History Library Film 0200148 which is a copy of the National Archives and Records Administration's microfilm publication "Passenger Lists of Vessels Arriving at New Orleans, 1 Feb. 1840 - 29 June 1840."  Beneath the transcript, I have added annotations giving additional information on each of the 24 individuals in the group traveling from Herbeuville and Hannonville to Darke County.

Annotations added by William H. McNitt

These annotations are based on vital records transcriptions published in French Ancestors newsletter (published by Marianne Doyle, 2923 Tara Trail, Beavercreek, Ohio, 45434-6252).  In a few cases I have conducted additional research of my own in the Hannonville records available through LDS Family History Libraries as Film 1228317.

Jean Francois Couchot was born on 25 October 1794 at Hannonville-sous-les-Côtes, Meuse, France, and was the son of Joseph Couchot and Margaret Mailly.  He married Marie Anne Benoit on 1 May 1815 at Hannonville-sous-les-Côtes.  He died on 2 February 1878 in Darke County, Ohio, and is buried in Holy Family Cemetery at Frenchtown, Darke County.  Fellow passengers Marguerite and Gerard Mougeville were his daughter and son-in-law.  His grandmother was a Humbert, so he may have been distantly related to fellow passenger Antoine Humbert.  View Jean Francois Couchot and some of his family in the 1850 census of York Township, Darke County on page 467A (Family 33 - his name is listed as John Francis Cushau).

Marie Anne Benoit was born on 18 September 1797 at Hannonville-sous-les-Côtes, Meuse, France, and was the daughter of Jean Nicolas Benoit and Marie Marguerite Jacquot.  She married Jean Francois Couchot on 1 May 1815 at Hannonville-sous-les-Côtes.  She died on 24 April 1857 in Darke County, Ohio, and is buried in Holy Family Cemetery at Frenchtown, Darke County without a tombstone.  She was a first cousin of fellow passenger Martine Aubry as her father and Martine's mother were brother and sister.  Fellow passengers Marguerite and Gerard Mougeville were her daughter and son-in-law.

Jean Francois Couchot was born on 28 March 1824 at Hannonville-sous-les-Côtes, Meuse, France, and was the son of Jean Francois Couchot and Marie Anne Benoit.  He died 30 April 1873 at Darke County, Ohio, and is buried in Holy Family Cemetery at Frenchtown, Darke County.

Marguerite Daudier was born on 23 April 1813 at Hannonville-sous-les-Côtes, Meuse, France, and was the daughter of Francois Daudier and Marguerite Charles.  She married Antoine Humbert on 11 September 1832 at Hannonville-sous-les-Côtes.  Is she the Maria Humbert who died Jan. 20, 1861 at Darke County, OH at he age of 50, and is buried in Holy Family Cemetery at Frenchtown, Darke County without a tombstone?  Her grandmother was a Mougeville, so she may have been related to fellow passenger Gerard Mougeville.

Anne Martine Drouot was born on 13 November 1798 at Hannonville-sous-les-Côtes, Meuse, France, and was the daughter of Jean Nicolas Drouot and Firmine Benoit.   She married Jean Francois Aubry on 19 November 1827 at Herbeuville, Meuse, France.  She died on 3 October 1872 at Wabash Township, Darke County, Ohio, and is buried in Holy Family Cemetery, Frenchtown, Darke County.  She was a first cousin of fellow passenger Marie Couchot as her mother and Marie's father were brother and sister.

Auguste Aubry was born on 19 August 1839 at Herbeuville, Meuse, France, and was the son of Jean Francois Aubry and Anne Martine Drouot.  I have not found any information about him in Darke County records, so he may have died young.

Gerard Mougeville was born on 28 December 1818 at Hannonville-sous-les-Côtes, Meuse, France, and was the son of Jean Nicolas Mougeville and Ursulle Montignon.  He married Marguerite Couchot on 27 January 1840 at Hannonville-sous-les-Côtes.  He died on 3 August 1877 at Darke County, Ohio, and was buried in Holy Family Cemetery, Frenchtown, Darke County.
