Passenger List for the Ship Oglethorpe, July 7, 1838

On July 7, 1838, the ship Oglethorpe arrived in the port of New Orleans, Louisiana after a voyage from Le Havre in France.  Aboard were 70 passengers bound for the United States, most of them immigrants from France.  Included among the passengers were at least three families from the neighboring villages of Hennemont and Boinville-en-Woëvre in the Department of the Meuse (part of the old region of Lorraine) in France.  They were headed for Darke County, Ohio, located northwest of Cincinnati, near the Ohio-Indiana state line.

Reproduced below is a transcript of the complete handwritten passenger list presented by the ship's captain to port authorities upon the arrival of the ship.  The handwriting is sometimes hard to read, so I made my best guess on some names.  I transcribed the list from Family History Library Film 0200145 which is a copy of the National Archives and Records Administration's microfilm publication "Passenger Lists of Vessels Arriving at New Orleans, 2 July 1838 - 29 January 1839."  Beneath the transcript, I have added annotations giving additional information on each member of the families traveling from the Meuse to Darke County.

District of Mississippi - Port of New Orleans

I, R.N. Thorpe, Master or Commander of the the ship Oglethorpe so solemnly, sincerely and truly swear, that the within List, signed by me and now delievered to the Collector of this District, contains the names of all Passengers, taken on board the said ship at the Port of Havre or at any time since, and that all matters  therein set forth are according to the best of my knowledge and belief just and true.  I do further swear, that one of the said Passengers have died on the voyage.  R.N. Thorpe

Sworn before me, this the 7th day of July 1838.  ----------, Collector.

Lewis George aged 1 years died upon 21st May
Paul Oglethorpe Dornary born 29 June

Annotations added by William H. McNitt

These annotations are based on vital records transcriptions published in French Ancestors newsletter and a book of Hennemont vital records (both published by Marianne Doyle, 2923 Tara Trail, Beavercreek, Ohio, 45434-6252).  The records on the Begin and George children have not been published previously and are from research by Marianne Doyle.

Louis Grillot was born on 15 June 1787 at Pareid, Meuse, France, and was the son of Jean Charles Grillot and Jeanne Barbe Curely.  He married Marie Borin on 14 January 1812 at Hennemont, Meuse, France.  He died on 18 February 1861 at York Township, Darke County, Ohio, and is buried in Holy Family Cemetery, Frenchtown, Darke County.  View Louis and his family in the 1850 census of York Township, Darke County on page 467A  (he is listed as Lewis Grilliot).

Marie Borin was born on 19 January 1790 at Hennemont, Meuse, France, and was the daughter of Henry Sulpice Borin and Francoise Elizabeth Chaudelet.  She married Louis Grillot on 14 January 1812 at Hennemont.  She died on 23 May 1868 at York Township, Darke County, Ohio, and is buried in Holy Family Cemetery, Frenchtown, Darke County.

Louis Joseph Grillot was born on 19 March 1815 at Hennemont, Meuse, France, and was the son of Louis Grillot and Marie Borin.  He died on 18 December 1868 at York Township, Darke County, Ohio, and is buried in Holy Family Cemetery, Frenchtown, Darke County.

Henry Sulpice Grillot was born on 20 October 1819 at Hennemont, Meuse, France, and was the son of Louis Grillot and Marie Borin.  He married Marguerite Leona Larminach on 23 November 1852 at Frenchtown, Darke County, Ohio.  He died on 1 February 1886 at Wabash Township, Darke County, and is buried in Holy Family Cemetery, Frenchtown.

In spite of the spelling of the surname, this apparently is Jean Francois Begin (this surname was often pronounced by old-timers as "Bay-zhee").  Jean Francois Begin was born on 22 November 1789 at Hennemont, Meuse, France, and was the son of Nicolas Begin and Barbe Henry.  He married Marguerite Le Reboulet on 3 March 1813 at Hennemont.

Jean Joseph Begin was born in 1816 at Hennemont, Meuse, France, and was the son of Jean Francois Begin and Marguerite Le Reboulet.

Although listed as female on the passenger list, he is Francois Begin in the Hennemont records.  Francois was born in 1818 at Hennemont, Meuse, France, and was the son of Jean Francois Begin and Marguerite Le Reboulet. He died in 1899 at Darke County, Ohio, and is buried at St. Valbert's Cemetery, Wayne Township, Darke County. View Francois and his family in the 1850 census of Wayne Township, Darke County on page 307B.
