Introduction

We have chosen to do our project on the subject of guide dogs, first of all, because we just love dogs. Secondly, we think the use of dog for humanitarian needs ought to be recommended and appreciated.

Dogs are more than just plain animals. They too have feelings - they are loving, caring and most of all - loyal. These qualities make them the ideal companion for man to be at his side and assist him whenever necessary.

Today man has found dogs to be useful in many areas - dogs are used to guide the blind and the deaf, they assist the security forces in detecting drugs and they help rescue crews find people under wreckage.

In order to help man to get the best from his dogs, many researchers have studied the nature of different breeds of dogs in order to discover certain qualities that make certain breeds more successful in certain tasks than others. From that point on a whole new science of dog breeding has evolved. Now there are strict rules as to how to raise a dog to behave in specific ways - how to be obedient, how to follow orders, how to communicate with man in a language they both understand etc. Today even the issue of raising puppies is very crucial to the success of the future dog behavior, so we chose to put an emphasis on that issue as well.

We hope you’ll enjoy browsing through our project.
