It's funny about this movie. You start off with a rough sketch of characters, very loosely based on something you know about. Then the characters develop their own personalities. Then the actors build on the characters, fleshing them out. Then you shoot the thing, (hopefully) based on a coherent script. Then you edit it. By the time you finish, it's amazing you recognize the thing at all. At any rate, no matter how close to your original idea the finished work is, it's developed a life of its own and you're pretty much free from it, whether or not you want to be.
I can't think Carol, Michael or Mary now without thinking how they look on film. All of the uncertainties give way to certainties. Each scene is locked down into reality and it's time to move on.
