While narrating for the BBC's 'Future Fantastic' series Gillian Anderson was given a pair of headphones so she could listen to the music that was to be played with her narration. As she told Rolling Stone: "I would here the music for the series and kept saying, 'My God, what is this music? That's fabulous.' And I went to the producer about it. I said,' This music is great. You have to pot together a CD.' And he said, 'Well, would you be willing to put together some vocals on it?" And I said, 'I don't sing, but I'm willing to do something on it."
What she ended up with was a sort of "poetic and erotic"- type narration style which she describes as a really great dance single. "It's not a new career move by any means but it made me feel fun and alive while I was working on it."
I don't know what happened stateside but over here the single was released on the 12th of June and went straight into the charts at N 23. Unfortunately it pretty much disappeared after that and I haven't really found it since. There was also a video made showing Gillian wandering around a very white room watching what is apparently a fantasy of hers- two robots having sex (!)
I think in the UK you can still buy the single in places like Virgin Megastores and HMV. The single is called "'Extremis' by Hal- featuring Gillian Anderson". The album is called "'Future- a journey through the electronic underground'- featuring: Hal (featuring Gillian Anderson), fluke, potek, massive attack, etc... "
The music itself is very close to that used on the series and I'd probably call it something like techno- rock. It's not really my cup of tea but it may be yours, and even if it isn't, believe me it grows on you....(And, of course GA is in it!).
