Patty and Lauren
-
Lauren Hutchinson (Amy
Linker)
-
Lauren was the instigator of much of the adventures that she and best friend
Patty Greene got into. Lauren was desperate to be a part of the "popular
group" at Weemawee, and would do almost anything to make that dream come
true. Unhappily for her, she was somewhat overweight and wore braces, thus
earning her nicknames such as "Fang" and "That Fat Girl" from the popular
kids. She tended to reject Marshall and Johnny, who liked her, in hopes
of being liked by the popular group, but without success. Over the course
of the series, Lauren gradually came to accept herself and her friends,
and hopefully she found true happiness as a result.
-
Patty Greene (Sarah Jessica Parker)
-
Patty, like Lauren, wants to be popular, but she doesn't want to pretend
to be something she isn't in order to be liked. She wants to be liked for
who she is. However, out of friendship to Lauren, she often finds herself
doing things she wouldn't do on her own. She is much kinder to Marshall
and Johnny than Lauren is, and she isn't afraid to speak up when she or
Lauren are subjected to some cruelty by the popular kids. Patty is very
bright (she has one of the three highest GPA's in the school) but is insecure
about her looks. She hates having to wear glasses (she's had them since
she was 2), but her mother won't let her get contact lenses. She is somewhat
thin, which resulted in Muffy Tepperman calling her "Stringbean." She would
like to go to clubs in the city with Johnny, but her curfew is 10:30 PM.
Her birthday is in October. She has a sharp sense of humor. You can see
her savoring the moment just before she unleashes one of her zingers. Her
parents are divorced, and she lives with her mother and younger brother.
She once had a crush on John-Boy Walton.
-
Marshall Blechtman (John
Femia)
-
The class clown. He does some impressions (his Lucille Ball is classic,
though his Howard Cosell stinks.) Marshall seizes every opportunity to
perform, volunteering for the telethon to raise money for Jennifer, announcing
at the girl's football game, practicing Three Stooges routines in class
with his buddy, Johnny Slash. He prefers the Munsters to the Addams Family,
going so far as to state that Herman
Munster is his idol. Works as a DJ
at and is in charge of the school "radio" station, WWEM. Mo Spengler and
His Band of Renown played at his bar mitzvah. Marshall has a crush on Lauren.
-
Johnny Slash (Merritt
Butrick)
-
Real name John Ulasewicz. He is New Wave (definitely not punk.) He prefers
the Addams Family to the Munsters, but gets along with Marshall anyway.
Ate eight bags of pork rinds when the Dead Boys broke up. Having been left
back at some point, he is old enough to drive. Has a job as a bag boy at
a supermarket.
-
Jennifer DiNuccio (Tracy
Nelson)
-
Perhaps the most popular girl in the freshman class, she is a total snob.
She hasn't been without a boyfriend for more than one hour since she was
10. Her father is Dino DiNuccio, of Dino DiNuccio's Very Reliable Cars
(slogan-"Where cars are sold to our customers everyday.") and is generally
very well off financially. Jennifer's life revolves around shopping; she
believes "a woman's place is in the mall." Her next greatest pleasure seems
to come from mocking Patty and Lauren. Always ready to join a team or support
a cause if it means better grades or less homework. One of the courses
she is taking is "Survey of Typing." Home phone number was 255-6521 (or
maybe 555-6521.)
-
Vinnie Pasetta (Jon
Caliri)
-
Good looking but dumb, Vinnie is Jennifer's boyfriend. He plays guitar
and is handy with electronics. He occasionally displays decent instincts
and seems to appreciate Patty's sense of humor, but he generally joins
in with Jennifer in taunting the "square pegs." Drives a van, which has
shag carpeting in the back. He won last year's Tri-State weightlifting
meet in the Cruiserweight division with a lift of 170 pounds. His aunt
is a nun, who taught him protest songs.
-
LaDonna Fredericks (Claudette
Wells)
-
Jennifer's best friend. She is perhaps even nastier to Lauren and Patty
than Jennifer is, usually referring to them as "That Fat Girl" and "That
Fat Girl's Friend." Thinks Rob's last name is Doberman. As a DJ, called
herself "Your Midnight Madonna, Lady LaDonna."
-
Muffy B. Tepperman (Jami
Gertz)
-
Incredibly peppy freshman. Captain of the JV Pep Squad, chairman of the
Weemawee Pep Committee, head of the Morals Club, chairman of the Science
Fair Committee, member of the Future Nurses of America. She spent eighth
grade in China, and due to customs problems, delayed the gift-giving portion
of her bat mitzvah until 14. Her father, Alan Tepperman, is a lawyer. Her
maternal grandmother, Vida Aranov, took a liking to Johnny Slash at Muffy's
bat mitzvah, and calls her grandchildren "fascists." Her other grandmother
has been married 7 times. Has one sibling and an uncle named Lou. Can usually
be found raising money for the school's Guatemalan child. The last two
movies she saw were "Ordinary People" and "Escape To Witch Mountain."
-
Rob Donovan (Steven
Peterman)
-
Poli-Sci teacher. Likes his students to call him Rob. Gives new meaning
to the words "incredibly cute history teacher." Was a radical in college
during the 60's, and frequently talks about those times. Once tied his
college president up in his office, and another time threw the Dean's filing
cabinets in the river. He minored in theater. Lives with his girlfriend
and their son, who is in nursery school.
-
Principal Winthrop Dingleman (Basil
Hoffman)
-
Married, with children. Has a Ph. D. Sports a 9 handicap in golf. Grew
up across the street from Fabian in Philadelphia. Had a band in high school,
the Dingletones.
-
Ms. Alison Loomis(Catlin
Adams)
-
Health and Self-Sufficiency teacher. She is very competitive with the girls.
Single, she is terribly afraid of being an old maid.
