Meanwhile, here's Christy Marx on writing for Captain Power:
One of the scripts that you wrote that is generally very popular amongst CP fans is 'Gemini and Counting' - what are your thoughts on the script and the story? Is there anything that, thinking back, you would have changed in the script or liked to have emphasised more? Were there any bits that landed on the floor of the editing room?
The first thing you have to realize is how long it's been since I wrote that script. My recall of it is fairly vague at this point. I remember how much I enjoyed writing it and that I was very, very satisfied with the end result. I don't remember anything being cut.
Did you have a favourite character?
Not especially. I liked the overall mix of characters. I certainly liked writing Pilot. I had a lot of fun with her replacement character, too [*]
[*]Christy Marx is referring to Christine 'Ranger' O'Connor, the new female regular that would have been introduced in the second season of CP.
How did you feel about the decision to kill Pilot at the end of the 1st season? [Aside from the fact of course that Jessica Steen wanted to go?]
>I thought it provided a powerful punch to the end of the series and it opened an opportunity for a new female character, so generally I saw it as a good thing.
If you ever got an opportunity to write for Captain Power again, what kind of story/stories would you like to do?
The same kind of dark, hard-action stories we did the first time around. Mainly, I'd like to do it as an adult series and not have to worry about playing to a young audience.
In Freedom One, there seems to be a very slight chemistry between Freedom One and Captain Power, and it's open to argument that there's a little spark between Pilot and the leader of the resistant, Elzer. Did you intend to write that into the story or is that just my imagination getting over active?
With Freedom One and Power, I wanted lots of spark and chemistry between them. I'd hoped for even more than we got. As for Elzer and Pilot, I don't remember deliberately going after that. Here's an inside joke: my father's name is Elzer and my dad managed a radio station and did radio broadcasts when I was growing up. So I turned him into the character.
Did you meet any of the actors? If so, what were your impressions?
No, it was shot in Canada, as I recall.
What was it like working with JMS?
It was an excellent experience. If I found myself floundering over some point in the script, he could look at it and give me a solution in a matter of seconds.
