HOW TO BREAK INTO TELEVISION
There are two things you need in order to be a success in
television: hard work and an extremely strong desire to succeed. If you're
looking for a paying job in TV but have no experience, don't worry, there
are a couple of ways to get experience. 1) You can volunteer at a
community access television station, or 2) Intern at a PBS or commercial
station.
To get really good hands-on experience, go to a community access
station. There, you will be able to operate cameras, audio boards, VTR
decks and if you ask, you may even be able to direct!!! You will be able
to work on shows from simple one-on-one interviews to technically
challenging shows.
You can also intern at a PBS or commercial television station. Some
of these stations are union, but you will at least be in a television
atmosphere. You may get lucky and the management may let you opertate a
camera. If you are good enough, and show a strong desire to learn, then
the station may hire you! Unfortunately you are not paid, but the
experience you will get will be priceless.
To get into television you have to work a lot of hours. But because
you need to have a strong desire to succeed, then you won't mind working a
lot of hours. So go out and volunteer or find an internship, it's that
simple. Trust me, you can make it, I DID!!!
