The shows
Sat 8 Jan (Special) - Join Phil & Ben as they help get the new station off to a start on Saturday morning when they host a special programme entitled Lift Off Music One. Rugby Mayor Jerry Roodhouse is guest of honour. (Ben nearly didn't make it - he was still in bed when Phil arrived to pick him up, less than 30 minutes before they were due on air. Hopefully the evening start will give him more time to rise. Mayor Roodhouse was a good sport and answered serious questions on the Borough as well as some typical Phil & Ben queries: "Have any of the councillors ever fallen asleep during a meeting?" and "Do you ever get fed up with seeing your picture in the local papers?" Ben even got to try on the Mayor's chain of office for size, an experience he likened to "having a year's supply of chocolate coins around your neck".) |
Mon 10 Jan (Show #1) - Tonight's Burning Question is "Does your car start first time?" Phone 547790 and start your car on air. If it fires first attempt, then it gets to be on the radio. Also the other usual features, plus music including Texas, U2 & The Beatles. (Phil & Ben made it through the first evening show intact, although two listeners complained after New Order's 'Blue Monday' was faded to make way for IRN news at 11 pm...) |
Tue 11 Jan (Show #2) - All listeners who phone or write in will now be entered into the draw to win a meal for two at Bengal Spice. Burning Question: "What's the best shop in Rugby?". Tracks include Oasis, Supergrass plus the 12" 'Blue Monday' played in full this time. (The slightly looser format seems to have benefitted the show. Phil & Ben now settling in a bit more. There were some phone calls and e-mails whilst the show was on air...) |
Wed 12 Jan (Show #3) - Tonight's programme features tracks by Rugby's mysterious Hard Disco - little is known about members MC-B and DJ-C. Also more opportunity to win the meal, plus music from Primal Scream, Macy Gray and Prince. (Ben gargled water for 17 seconds and earlier spilt (someone else's) tea over his and Phil's CDs. There were some calls from complimentary young ladies, but Phil managed to accidentally cut off a Hard Disco track mid-flow...more of them on later shows...) |
Thu 13 Jan (Show #4) - Phil & Ben's guests will be Bergin, Tinny & Dave, better known as Rugby quartet Flyboy. As well as talking about themselves and their music, they'll be drawing the winners of the Bengal Spice competition. (The boys arrived "late" but got things going in time for Flyboy's prompt arrival at 9.30. The band drew out the first Bengal Spice winner: Jeff Broom of New Bilton. Flyboy were then weighed in at a total of 40 st 7 lb. Ben's brother Sam phoned in to answer the band's competition and win their CDs, possibly prompting allegations of corruption, cronyism and sleaze at the heart of the show!..) |
Fri 14 Jan (Show #5) - With Ben fulfilling a prior commitment (his cousin's engagement party), Phil will be hosting tonight's show solo. Whilst he hopes for some callers, expect music from local acoustic group Wireless. (When he "remembered" that Ben wasn't with him, Phil kicked off with the seldom-heard Smiths track "I Started Something I Couldn't Finish", immediately prompting a phone call of enthusiastic approval. Wireless arrived at 9.30 and gave Music One its first live performance, playing acousitc versions of songs by The Beautiful South, Bob Dylan and Crowded House. Ben managed to appear during the second hour - on the phone...) |
Mon
17 Jan (Show #6) - The duo are back
together with some new prizes including a quiz to enter a
prize draw for a meal from Barby Sporting. Music by Elvis
Presley, The Beastie Boys and REM amongst many others. (Ben was not feeling 100% tonight after being a bit ill at the weekend. So, the Burning Question was "Does Ben deserve any sympathy?" He got some kind words from several girl fans, one of whom described him as "the true talent behind the show!", although another insisted that "Phil is the driving force". The last comment is of course correct, as Phil picks up Ben and drives him to every show - it's the only way to stop him being late!..) |
Tue
18 Jan (Show #7) - Will Ben feel any
better? You can still win a meal at Barby Sporting by
phoning in with the name of the Rolling Stones drummer.
Phil hopes to share a joke or two...if you have any for
him to tell, e-mail them in! Your requests are also very
welcome... (Ben felt a bit better - he even shaved and freshened up at the start of the show. Colin Stephens won the Barby Sporting meal by naming Charlie Watts as Stones drummer. Emma from Bilton asked the lads to plug her search for band members and even called back to demand "more enthusiasm" from them! Ben played dominos with Phil's CDs and jumped out of the window to avoid hearing The Smiths. Then there was an ironic sexist e-mail about cash machines...) |
Wed
19 Jan (Show #8) - Midweek mayhem
with the Men In Glasses. Call with your requests on
547790 and e-mail jokes to musiconerugby@hotmail.com . Ben
should be 100% back to normal tonight, so prepare for
some cutting wit and dry commentary... (Phil dropped his biggest "clanger" yet on the count Ben is keeping - he messed up the intro to the show, but just managed not to crash the vocal on The Stone Roses 'One Love'. There were a few requests, plus an unexpected live call from Ben's godmother Penny in New Zealand...) |
Thu
20 Jan (Show #9) - Special guests
tonight are White Star - Rugby's
rockingest pub band. Members Duane, Matty and soundman
Nige will join Phil & Ben from 9.30pm onwards and
will make the second Bengal Spice draw. Also a little
quiz to guess who is doing an Abba cover. (White Star represented themselves well and were even able to embarrass Phil by reminding him of when he managed to walk into a bus shelter in broad daylight on holiday last year. This is what happens when you invite bands on whose members are personal friends! The singer of the Abba song was Denise Van Outen, by the way...) |
Fri
21 Jan (Show #10) - Phil & Ben
welcome the weekend with a host of bopping pop tunes.
Tonight, they've got more pop than the R Whites Lemonade
factory. Also another meal at Barby Sporting goes on
offer. (The lads really enjoyed this one...they'd been a bit tired in the final half hour of the last show, so were determined to make this a good performance. There were a couple of requests, but Fridays do tend to be quiet...) |
Mon
24 Jan (Show #11) - CANCELLED. Due to Phil being ill, this evening's show will not be airing. Guests Deep Sea Divers have been rescheduled to Mon 31 Jan (see guest list above). Refresh this page for daily updates on when the Phil & Ben Show will return. (The slot was covered by Keith Greenwood) |
Tue
25 Jan (Show #12) - CANCELLED. (The slot was covered by Keith Greenwood) |
Wed
26 Jan (Show #13) - CANCELLED. (The slot was covered by Nathan Pestridge) |
Thu
27 Jan (Show #14) - Phil & Ben
return, with the former now recovered from the virus that
struck him down at the weekend (although his voice may
sound a little marinated). Tonight, the winner of the
second Barby Sporting meal will be drawn. (Ben reckoned this was his favourite show so far. Towards the end, Nathan Pestridge phoned in from Tesco's where he was working and informed Music One that it was going out across the in-store speaker system...Phil & Ben said good evening to Tesco's customers, naturally...) |
Fri
28 Jan (Show #15) - Guest band
Afterglow appear at 9.30 pm tonight. For the rest of the
time, Phil & Ben bring you music to get the weekend
underway, plus the usual load of rubbish talked in
between the songs. (The acoustic set from Afterglow - guitar and violin - went down very well...) |
Sat
29 Jan (Special Show) - Join the
lads from 10 o'clock in the morning for a couple of hours
which have been entitled "Phil & Ben's Weekend
Bit". No-one knows what will happen, least of all
Phil & Ben themselves - they only agreed to this
extra slot on Thursday evening! (The lads were actually only in the studio until 11.45 - they left 15 mins early so that Phil could make it to a haircut appointment...) |
Mon
31Jan (Show #16) - Deep Sea
Divers make their long-awaited appearance,
after being rescheduled from one of last week's cancelled
shows. The band will play an acoustic set. There's also
the start of another competition to win a meal at Barby
Sporting. (The Divers played three songs live between 9.30 and 10 pm. Later in the show, Phil tried to in ject a bit of controversy by asking "Has football gone down the pan'?" There was one caller in response - a man called Roger who sounded remarkably like Ben's dad Colin...) |
Tue
1 Feb (Show #17) - A visit from Visitation is amongst
tonight's highlights. The band will take the lads through
some of their own recordings and talk about their
favourite music. Tuesday is usually a good night for
phone calls, so maybe someone will play Seventh Heaven
this evening... (...In the end, nobody did play. However, Visitation's visit went well, with three of their spaced-out tracks being aired in full. Mark and Nige entered into the spirit of the show, even bringing Phil and Ben some stick-on name badges...) |
Wed
2 Feb (Show #18) - Check out special
guests My Darling
Ni-Hilist between 9.30 and 10.00 pm.
They will be introducing some tracks from their CD
'Crushed'. Also another 'Burning Question' to phone in
for and a 'Songs of Phrase' lyric to guess... (My Darling Ni-Hilist caused a stir, with outspoken lead singer Sam apparently having been down the pub before appearing. His use of the words "arse" and "crap" didn't go down too well with Music One. Still, it was a lively half hour. The Burning Question asked listeners whether the Brit Awards were "a pile of old pants"...) |
Thu
3 Feb (Show #19) - Phil & Ben
interview Sancho whose
forthcoming single "When You Come Down" is
currently getting airplay on Music One. They'll be making
the draw to see who wins this week's meal at Bengal Spice.
Plus more Men In Glasses mayhem in the penultimate show. (The entire quartet of Sancho arrived with their manager in tow. Unexpectedly, they brough a guitar and played two acoustic songs live as well as chatting. It turned out they had come from Ipswich just to be on the show! Their management company is based in Daventry...) |
Fri
4 Feb (Show #20) - This is it...the
final show in the run. Over the last four weeks, Phil
& Ben have hosted 18 shows including the two weekend
specials (with three cancellations due to illness).
Tonight, they bring their Music One airtime up to 38
hours. Join them from 9 pm... (Ben owed Phil some petrol money. At the start of the show, he was able to muster up 73p - so he still owes Phil some petrol money! The final edition went as well as could be hoped. Ben discovered how to lower his chair (that only took 37 hours spent sitting in it!). It all came to a finish with the Hawaii Five-O theme giving way to The Beatles' "The End" - and you can't say fairer than that, can you?) |
