Matt Dillon Speaks
On his years as a teen idol:
"They thought I was cute. Isn't that what they
thought? I mean, you're asking me this. To them, that's all I was. And
that was a little hard to deal with."
On gambling:
"Roulette is a sucker's game. Odds are bad. I
prefer craps, even though the odds are best in blackjack. You have a leisurely
time at the blackjack table. The craps table gets real feverish."
On if he's ever been in therapy:
"No, I haven't. I probably should at some point…
Because I can be a very angry person."
On shooting stars:
"Call me an unromantic guy, but it doesn't mean
a thing to me. I mean, it's one of those things you want me to say I like,
even if I don't."
On things he doesn't like:
"Tripe. I don't care for stomach lining; now that's
a fact. I also don't care for sweetbreads. I don't care for sunflower seeds."
On marriage:
"At one time, marriage was a sacrament - at least,
you know, in the Catholic church. You swore the sacraments. Like Communion.
Now marriage is a contract, a legal contract. People are committing to
relationships much more than they were ten or twelve years ago. People
are settling down, people are getting more monogamous - that's my perception.
But there's a reluctance to get married, maybe because it seems like you're
not just getting married to her, you're getting married to her lawyer.
Or your lawyer, you know what I mean? It's over-the-top."
On if he makes loads of money as an actor:
"You'd think, right? Trust me, I've done my share
of low-paying films I believed in so deeply that I've practically refinanced
my home in order to do them."
On If he's black Irish:
"Yeah, I guess I am. I mean, I know that I have
relatives in Ireland because I've seen them walking down O'Connell Street
in Dublin."
On architectural aesthetics:
"I'll tell you what really bothers me: When I
see somebody build an ugly building and cram people in it just to make
some money, and everyone else is forced to look at it. No one wants to
look at a horrible building."
On the effects of nicotine:
"My doctor has given me distressing news about
smoking. He says if you look at pictures of me taken five years ago, you
will see that I've aged rapidly from smoking. But I'm not worried about
aging. From an actor's point of view, it's good on one end because the
roles get more interesting."
On the hardest thing about being Matt Dillon:
"I doubt certain things about myself. Self-doubt
is probably my biggest obstacle."
