Bonnie Blue Butler was nicknamed after Melanie makes a remark a week after her birth. The remark was about how her eyes that were 'as blue as the bonny blue flag'. Her real name was Eugenia Victoria. (Although, personally, I like the name 'Bonnie' better.) She was the only child that Rhett and Scarlett had. There was to be a second child, but Scarlett had a miscarriage after falling down the stairs. (In the sequel, Scarlett has another child with Rhett, Cat. But, since 'Scarlett' isn't great, in my opinion at least, I choose to ignore that it is the sequel.)
Bonnie was the apple of Rhett's eye. He was determined that she would be accepted by good people, even if he and Scarlett had to 'crawl on their bellies in front of every old cat in town'. The dowagers in the town thought that any man who could love a child so much had to have some good in him, so Bonnie was accepted into the ring of decent people.
Bonnie was petted and spoiled. After her death, Rhett confided in Scarlett that he often pretended that Bonnie was her, before the war and life had done things to her.
Rhett, in Scarlett's opinion, did everything in his power to make Bonnie love him and not her. He took Bonnie away to England after Scarlett told him that she did not want any more children. Bonnie wanted to go home to her mother, and that was the only reason Rhett returned. Their marriage fell apart after Bonnie's death. She had just learned to ride sidesaddle, after Mammy had thoroughly scolded Rhett about letting a 'girl chile ride astraddle with her dress flyin' out behind her'. She told them that she had just raised the bar, and wanted to jump. Rhett tried to stop her, but it was too late. She was going for the jump.
Scarlett sat back in her furs and muttered, 'just like Pa'. Then she remembered, Gerald had died the same way, by jumping a horse. She screamed as Bonnie rode up to the bar, the pony stopped, and Bonnie was thrown through the wood onto the ground.
Bonnie had always been afraid of the dark, since Mammy had told her there were 'buggerboos' in the dark. Rhett moved her into his room and left a shaded light on all night. Now, he refused to put her into a dark, cold coffin when she had been so afraid of the dark. Melly had convinced him to let her be buried, then died herself soon after.
The part where Bonnie dies in the movie always starts me crying. Then, just minutes later, the heartbreaking scene where Melly dies comes on, and I start crying harder. And then Rhett leaves Scarlett, and I am hysterical. Don't you think they should have spaced the tragedies out a bit to let the viewers dry their eyes, blow their noses and settle down a bit? The actress Cammie King who portrayed Bonnie did not have a big part in the movie, but a memorable one. Everyone seems to love this child of Scarlett and Rhett's, for she was a symbol of their love -- the love Scarlett didn't know she had.
The first picture is of Bonnie and her father, Rhett. The second is with her mother, Scarlett.
