The Interview

Let's start with the basics, what's your sign ?

*laughs* Are you trying to pick me up ?

Maybe.

Well then, it's Virgo - and I'm a very typical virgo too.

How's that ?

I have all of the qualities that a virgo is supposed to have, we are always right, we're picky, very emotional, loyal ... you know.

So were you born in September ?

Yup. On the twelveth

Were you born to be a rockstar ?

I'm destined for something like that - at least I'd like to think so. I always liked guitar ... that or the drums. I think I started to sing because I always do it and I was also the only one, out of my group of friends, that didn't mind being in front of a crowd of people. I don't get embarassed or frightened easily so I guess that makes me good for the job. I like glamorous stuff and I like to wallow in it.

What was the first song you did ?

Ha ! That's was a talent show in grade six - we started off with "Wild Thang" by Tone Loc. That's the song which got our foot in the door. We, then, worked on "Summer of 69" by Brian Adams ... that was funny. Someone out there has that all on video tape too - I think we did pretty well, our crowd was our parents. I tell ya, it got us popularity with some of the girls - which is always important right ?

*Laughs* But of course. So how did you get involved with 'Special Agent Utah' ?

I saw an ad for a singer position in their band - they were the first ones I called. I drove all the way down to Robs' house (the drummer), lost my car keys ( don't ask me how )as I was getting out of the car and spent an hour looking for those - I kinda figured that this idea was cursed. I grabbed a demo tape and liked most of it. I really liked the songs 'Beach', '008' and 'Loaded'. I wasn't really sure, though, untill I had a practice with them - I felt that I could "speak the same language" so I gave it a try. Then I heard the song 'Obsession', which is the first song I wrote - it just came out of my head ... I love that song, that was the clincher. Now, it just becomes easier and easier to write together because we get a vibe going. Most important, they are cool guys so it makes it fun.

What inspires you to write ?

Just about anything, really. See, our song-making is at a funny stage right now. They make the music, tape it, and give it to me. I take this music, sit under my blacklight and see what the song makes me feel like then I write down whatever comes out. If nothing comes out I know that I won't like that song and I won't write for it. I use alot of emotions and ,like, wierd thoughts that occur to me while I'm just doing everyday-type stuff. I'm not going to use that "I'm an observer" line on you because I think that's pretty lame. I prefer to think of it as 'I'm on the inside, looking out and around' ... we are all in the same bowl, no matter how far we wish to remove ourselves from everybody else. I'm, like, right in there - you know.

Who influences you ?

That depends ... for music I look up to people like Frank Sinatra, Tom Jones, Bono and Edwin - they are all my favorite singers/frontmen ... they are all amazing ! For my own personal role model ... either my dad or my grandfather. My dad is probably the coolest person I know - he introduced me to almost every band I listen to now. He's just a really cool guy ... my whole family is really cool - a bunch of friggin' comedians ! They are probably responsible for all of my 'prankster' qualities.

Do you have any favorite songs ?

It's either 'The Rain Song' by Led Zeppelin or 'Every Little Thing She Does is Magic' by The Police. I think that those are two of the best songs ever witten. They still give me the chills. To me, if a song makes you think of a feeling or unleashes some sort of emotion within you - then it's a good song.

What type of music do you listen too ?

Pretty much everything, I listen to alot of Canadian rock/alternative, classical, lots of jazz baby !, blues, big band, oldies and smoothies, good ole rock 'n roll, industrial, hip hop ..... just everything. I mostly listen to canadian artists - not for any particular reason ... I just looked at my CD collection and found most of them to be canadian. We rock baby !

Who are your favorite bands ?

I would have to say that U2 is my all time fav ... I know all of their songs and I've been listening to them for as long as I remember - my dad got me into them. What else ? I like Led Zeppelin, The Tea Party ( My favorite canadian band ), I Mother Earth, Our Lady Peace, Finger Eleven, Matthew Good Band, Edwin ... see what I mean ? Pretty much any canadian artist.

Are you reading anything right now ?

I don't really read books - I mostly read non-fiction stuff. I like psychology and stuff about ancient religions. There is only one author that I read from if I read a novel. I like anything and everything by David Eddings - he's an amazing writter, definitely worth checking out ! I own almost every single book of his. He has this one series that has like 12 books to it - I read the first ten in under a month ... I love his work.

What do you do with yourself, when you have spare time ?

It's more like "... if I have spare time". I pack my days really tight. I don't know, I like to go for drives with my music just pumping. I love to just drive-off and disappear for a day or two. I like anything to do with the outdoors as well, I'm a big outdoors freak.

Where do you see yourself in a few years ?

Hopefully, still doing what I want to do. That's all I ever wanted to do in the first place. Just, always have fun and love your neighbour !
