South Beach

Here is my episode guide (always a work in progress) to, IMHO, a brilliant but sadly, short-lived series - it had great acting, lots of sarcasm, great exchanges between the leads and wonderful music - and only seven episodes were made - where's the justice? Check out my sounds page for some of the sound bytes of the quotes listed below (and many more)

Credits

Created by Dick Wolf and Robert de Laurentis
Executive Producer Dick Wolf
Supervising Producers Glenn Davis and William Laurin
Co-producer Monica Wyatt
Music
Mark Mothersbaugh

Starring...
Yancy Butler as Kate Patrick - a con-woman now working for Roberts
Patti D'Arbanville as Roxanne - keeps an eye on Kate for Roberts and also has a strange penchant for wigs - lots and lots of them
John Glover as Roberts - a government agent who prefers to do things his (often strange) way than involving the local police forces and also has a thing for fish - lots and lots of them :)
Eagle Eye Cherry as Vernon - Kate's friend and fellow con-artist
Tony Guzman as Caesar - Roberts' right hand man

Diamond In The Rough

The owner of a Miami salvage company steals a fortune in Russian diamonds and then disappears. His beautiful con-artist sister is coerced into becoming an undercover government operative in order to recover the diamonds and rescue her brother

Small-time Miami conwoman Kate Patrick (she only steals what she needs) is coerced into working for Roberts, a federal agent, in order to save the life of her brother Andy, who has stolen millions in diamonds from some deadly Russian operatives. Roberts arranges for Kate to be the go-between and meet with the Russians in order to bargain for her brother's life. When tragedy strikes and Kate realises where Andy hid the diamonds, she sets out for revenge with a plan of her own...

Oh, I stand corrected - it was in the pilot that Kate's extraordinary ability to crack safes with absolutely no materials whatsoever emerged :) This 2 hour series pilot was released in the UK rental market in 1994 and is also available in Norway.

Pirates of the Carribean

When the second yacht in a week is hijacked off the Florida coast, Roberts sends Kate equipped with a sixty-foot Italian Baia yacht, to turn the tables on the trio of thieves.

Written by Glenn Davis and William Laurin
Directed by Felix Enriques-Alcala'
Guest starring...Ramy Zada (Dark Justice) as McQueen, Elizabeth Schofield as Petra Currie, James Villemaire as Ben Donaldson, Steve Zahn (Reality Bites, Out of Sight, Happy Texas) as Lane Bailey and Daniel Moriarty as Jack Stevens.

Best Bits

Kate (after their meeting which Roberts arranged by sending a copy of Moby Dick): "Call you later?"
Roberts: "No, call me Ishmael."
Kate - confused look

After getting a sixty foot Baia yacht from Roberts to use as bait, Kate, looking very nautical in a sailors cap, shorts and top, takes Vernon out on a cruise.
Vernon: "You definitely get the soft end of these gigs y'know."
Kate: "Hey, I take risks! You ever hear of the word melanoma?"

Stake Out

Kate is partnered with an irresponsible gambler and thief on a stakeout of a wealthy woman who is suspected of bribing certain employees at City Hall.

Story by Robert De Laurentis
Teleplay by Glenn Davis and William Laurin
Directed by James Frawley

Guest starring...Tom Verica (Central Park West, The Naked Truth) as Matt O'Rourke, Lauren Lane (The Nanny) as Brooke Wyatt, Chase Randolph as Senator Glen Pearson.
Best bits One of the things I loved about this show was the huge amount of sarcasm in it, which this episode exemplifies

Roberts has Kate tail a man all morning and then meets her for her report
Roberts: "What's in the briefcase?"
Kate: "I didn't get a chance to look, but my guess is Fabrix watches..." (looks at Roberts' shaved head pointedly) "hair care products, tupperware catalogues..."
Roberts: "One more try now."
Kate: "Let's see now - a man goes to a million dollar mansion and then city hall..."(really sarcastically) "cash?".
Roberts (taking out photo): "Very clever".
Kate: "Oh, wait a minute, let me guess - she's giving him the money and it's some sort of..." (hushed whisper) "bribery!".
Roberts: "Her name is Brooke Wyatt - the premier real estate developer in South Beach, also a fixture on the charity circuit..."
Kate: "Hands out bread crumbs from the back of the mansion?"
Roberts: "Just about." (disdainfully) "She prefers women's issues, children's issues, poverty issues..."
Kate (throwing down photo): "Well God she has to be stopped!"

Kate: "So, how'd you wind up with Roberts?"
Matt: "I was at Yale working on my er... PhD thesis in applied criminology when Roberts heard about my work and just picked up the phone. What about you?"
Kate: "Oh, same thing more or less. I myself was doing some political consulting at the United Nations when he called."

Skin And Bones

Fine arts thief Astrid Busch steals a valuable chalice belonging to the Italian Arts Council. Her ex-partner blows up Astrid's boat and the chalice now lies at the bottom of the sea. Roberts sends Kate to retrieve it.

Story by Glenn Davis and William Laurin
Teleplay by Robert Palm
Directed by Ed Sherin

Guest starring...Malcolm Gets (Caroline in the City) as Jim Bradley, Alison Mackie (Sliver) as Astrid Busch and Michael Badalucco (The Practice) as Keane.

Wild Thing

While working on the recovery of stolen gold bullion, Roberts puts Kate in charge of Candy, the girlfriend of one of the suspected thieves. When Candy is kidnapped by thugs in search of the bullion, Kate manages to save her.

Written by Allison Robbins
Directed by Felix Enrique Alcala'

Guest starring...Jensen Daggett (Home Improvement) as Candy Gage, Brad Sullivan, Mathew Porretta and Nicholas Gregory

This episode wins the award for biggest plot point - Kate just walks up to a huge vault and just by putting her ear up to it, is able to crack the combination. Wow! (I'm sorry, I'm sorry - she actually demonstrates this ability in the pilot as well)- as well as most gratuitous use of Catwoman costumes - Kate's birthday party, which we don't see anything of is a costume party, which is an excuse (am I being cynical here? Moi?) to get YB and later Jensen Daggett into the requisite, tight-fitting Catwoman costumes, as well as getting to see Patti D'Arbanville dressed as a little girl. There is, however, a nice scene where Roberts is playing chess with three people simultaneously.

I Witness

Kate goes undercover, managing a Haitian bistro, to investigate liquor smuggling and to find and protect the boy who witnessed the former manager's execution.

Written by Glenn Davis and William Laurin
Directed by Christopher Leitch

Guest starring...Brandon Adams (The People Under The Stairs, Mighty Ducks) as TJ and S Epatha Merkerson (Mann & Machine, Law & Order) as Madam Bouchard.

Best bits

Kate quizzing Vernon on the Ton Ton Mecoute (sp!!) the Haitian Secret Police
Vernon: "Ton tons are a legend where I come from - not only can they kill you, but they can sign your soul to the spirit world."
Kate: "So I should count you out on this one."
Vernon: "No, I don't have a superstitious bone in my body."
Kate: "Good, then I'll meet you at Tabou later tonight."
Vernon: "I've just got to run home and get my lucky rabbit's foot."

Kate is about to ask Monique about TJ's father when the person she is undercover investigating, Nick Butler, walks in.
Kate (as Louise Derale (sp!!)): "Monique, can I just have word with you for a sec?"
Monique: "Yes Miss Derale."
Kate (spies Butler): "I was considering changing detergents - something more cost effective that doesn't necessarily compromise on cleansing strength and I was wondering if you had a personal preference..." (to Butler) "Hello."

Kate (trying to pump information from Roberts): "I have a little bone to pick with you."
Roberts: "I knew your restaurant experience would come in handy."
Kate: "Now explain to me again why I give you all my information, but you only give me the information that you think I need." Roberts: "Well.."
Kate (interrupts him): "Forget it. You'll just give me some long-winded, philosophical explanation and I'll go away feeling frustrated." (pauses) "It's hopeless - you can't teach an old dog new tricks."
Roberts (offended) : "What information do you need?"

Later when Roberts comes to take away the witness Kate has been hiding
Roberts: "I have a little bone to pick with you."
Kate: "About what?"
Roberts: "Why is it that when I share the information I don't want to share with you, you don't share the information you don't want to share with me?"
Kate: "Well..."
Roberts: "No - forget it. You'll just give me some far-fetched explanation and I'll go away feeling frustrated."

School For Scandal

When Roberts sends Kate after a counterfeiter who has flooded Florida with fake money, she comes in contact with Spencer Robinson, her first love and fellow con artist.

Written by Allison Robbins
Directed by James Frawley

Guest starring...Martin Donovan (Simple Men and many other Hal Hartley films, Portrait Of A Lady) as Spencer Robinson and Barbara Blackburn as Mary Trent.

Best bits

Ah, another exchange between Roberts and Kate ;) Roberts is briefing Kate on a rather dangerous assignment where the suspect is known to kill his partners.
Kate (outraged): "Go to Bryant Design and buy you furniture? What's next - that hard to find gift for your little lady, or windows or your dry cleaning?"
Roberts: "Next week it might be socks."
Kate: "Are there any acceptable questions I can ask?"
Roberts: "What colour do you want?"
Kate: "In other words, no - I'm just supposed to fight blind right?"
Roberts: "David Bryant. He's the owner. Single white male DOB 12-5-48. He's the major counterfeiter of Deutschmarks, we can't prove it - go in and see if you can."
Kate: "Or I could just pick up and leave Florida."
Roberts: "Pack light. Federal prisons colour coordinate your wardrobe. With your outstanding felonies, you won't have to worry about clothes until you're forty. See a designer named Mary Trent. I'm thinking something nice in steel."
Kate glares at him.

Rox (giving some advice to a confused Kate): "Never believe people when they tell you their great at anything. Never befriend anyone who uses the word 'heretofore' in a sentence and never ever lie with a man who has more problems than you do."

That's it for the episode guide for now - it is by no means finished and I plan to update it soon (promises, promises).
