JOHNSTOWN

HISTORY

Home of "The World's Steepest Vehicular Inclined Plane," Johnstown is a relatively small town located in southwestern Pennsylvania. It is named for Joseph Johns who discovered this area in 1793. Iron ore was mined in the beginning and eventually the town became the largest steel producer in America by the late nineteenth century.

We have survived three major floods as well as many smaller ones. The first and the biggest happened in May of 1889 when the South Fork Dam broke sending millions of gallons of water rushing toward the city. Hundreds were killed and it was the worst tragedy to ever hit this small city. Then in 1936 and in 1977 we were hit yet again by more floods. We've continued to rebuild since then making Johnstown a great place to live.

Most of the steel mills are shut down now, but we are still a busy little town. We are deemed "The Friendly City" and for a good reason: people are kind here and will take the time to stop and say hello. It is truly a wonderful place to call home.
