Facts around the making of the movie

It took 7 months to shoot the spectacular disaster epic Titanic-and they were far from smooth sailing. Each day was filled with both terrifying and exhilarating moments as the courageous cast and crew ladored in giant, bone-chilling water tanks on the set in Rosarita Beach, Mexico-often risking there lives!

Kate Winslet was nearly drowned shooting one critical scene and Leonardo Dicaprio was almost trampled by a horse.

Director James Cameron put safety first, there were many extremely close calls while lensing the mesmerizing drowning and lifeboat scenes, the floating bodies, and the falls from the sinking ship.

Winslet was so bruised during filming, she looked like a "battered wife". She also suffered from hypothermia-the drastic drop in body temperature, that killed many of the 1,523 real-life Titanic victims. She came within seconds of drowning when her long coat got snagged in a scene where she and Dicaprio are trapped behind a locked gate as flood waters rise. For some close ups, Winslet was weighted down under 12 feet of water so she'd stay in a fixed postion.

The massive set was tilted at an incredible 60 degrees, sending stunt men careening like pinballs. Three suffered broken bones when they slipped out of safety harnesses.

During the love scene, Dicaprio wore dark body makeup and Winslet wore white body powder. When they rolled around in each others arms under the hot lights in that Renault car, they ending up melting and getting their makeup all over each other. They thought it was funny that the makeup people had to rush in between takes to get the brown stuff off Kate and the whote off Leo. Cameron even gave Dicaprio lip for his poor kissing. He didn't think the kisses were passionette enough. He told Leo, "Just grab her and stick your tounge in her mouth, kiss her like you mean it!"
