OK, so the eighties were a weird time too, all Dallas and padded shoulders, and characters who always had perfectly applied makeup when they woke up in the morning. But it was a decade that spawned Blackadder, Friday Night Live (the UK version hosted by Ben Elton), and The Last Resort, to name a few.

There were also these great shows:

    • Alias the Jester Alias the Jester

Alias the Jester was about a little guy whose spaceship croaked, and dropped him unceremoniously into the court of King Arthur ("Yes, your Majesty, thankyou, your Majesty.") The picture above shows him with jinx buddies Boswell and Meredith. This was a Cosgrove-Hall production, and I think the voiceover of Alias was done by Richard Briers.

    • Let's Pretend......this was a very poor pretender to the throne of the classic "Pipkins." It had its moments, like the wiggly worm on a stick, and the "oh shit, what do we do now?" looks on the faces of the presenters. The basic premise was that a story would be enacted around a given set of props or basis of a tale. But there's only so much you can do with a pair of armbands, a cheese grater and a hula-hoop. Still, I watched it.

    • What a Mess......this qualifies as it was around dead on 1980. Messy dog, which was actually a Pedigree, voice by Frank Muir (what a Fruit and Nutcase)...sadly, that's all I can remember.

    • Your Mother Wouldn't Like It

    • Behind the Bikesheds. Featured a young Tony Slattery and that kid who used to do the Heinz soup adverts.

    • The Moomins... I always wanted to be the Snork Maiden..........it just sounded good.

The Moomins were based on the books and drawings by Tove Jansson, and were about little rotund fellas who lived in forests in Finland.

POP QUIZ....Who was Moomintroll's best friend?

    • Fat Tulip's Garden I tell you no lies, there was a tortoise called Lewis Collins. Hmm. All acted out by Tony Robinson, totally sublime and trippy!

    • The StorytellerI had a friend who fancied this guy...very strange as it was a cartoon character....!

      In Russia I am Ivan
      In Sweden I am Jan,
      In Germany I'm Johann,
      In England I am John...."

      Classic!
    • Hold Tight A sort of pop show filmed at Alton Towers, no doubt in freezing conditions, featuring such top pop acts as Westworld.....what a sad memory I have!!!!!

    • Razmatazz Hmm......fledgling Lisa Stansfield hosted this pop programme-quiz show-hybrid monster (did she slap a kid on air? I'd like to think so!) and Alistair Pirrie with his gradient tinted shades and stupid piano keyboard tie. Early appearances from Marilyn and Kajagoogoo.........cor, worth remembering, eh? "Rah rah rah rah RAZMATAZZ!!!!"

    • On Safari Yeah yeah, Chris Biggins, alarming amounts of gunge, and Gillian Taylforth dressed up in "me Jane" snazzy outfit. Very poor indeed.

    • Knightmare Sort of "Crystal Maze" for kids. One contestant being guided around a neon lit board by other kids in a control room....left...one step right.......agh he's behind you...and all that.

    • Marmalade Atkins...bad girl warning. My role model!

    • Cockleshell Bay

Robin & RosieRobin & Rosie, Mr Ship and.........cheese and chutney sandwiches...yum!

    • Orm & Cheep........if only Cheep could fly.......

    • Gilbert's Fridge Gilbert was my hero. A green alien with a constantly snotty nose, reknowed for his David Coleman impressions, I think he was first on the Millenium Dustbin segment of "Motormouth."

    • Stopit and Tidyup All I remember is voice over by Terry Wogan, and a character called "I Said No"!

    • The Trap Door

      Berk!

    • Telebugs

Am I the only person who remembers the Telebugs? Whenever I mention they were little guys with tellies for bellies, I get those "yeah, ok" looks. Its true, honest!!!! Used to be on ITV before Blockbusters. If anyone else can verify this, please post a message on the guestbook!!!!

      UPDATE!!! I'm not going mad after all(?!*!) The Telebugs ad faces made of pixels, and there is a Telebugs site on the net, if you check out the guestbook. I think the theme went;

      I have a heart
      Burning deep inside
      Together we can make
      Our dreams come true

At least, that was the end, the beginning was some twiddly-synth thing.

    • Cloppa Castle A kingdom of hasbeens?? CAn anyone help me on this?

    • Little Blue

Little Blue was about an elephant who "bit his Mummy's fountain pen and broke it in two" and that's why he was blue you see. But why did he go to school with a load of human kids???

POP QUIZ........Who was Little Blue's best friend?

    • How Dare YouClive Webb and John Gorman from Tiswas appeared on this show...later in the Eighties the theme music was adapted from Five Star's "Stay out of My Life"...I feel quite ashamed at remembering that. Oh dear.

    • The Giddy Game Show

....I used to love this....it was on in the lateish 80s, I would have been around 16 or 17. It was a puzzle game for kids, with a gorilla and a little green alien type (Giddy). The late Bernard Bresslaw was the voice of Gorilla......most enduring memory......."Giddy's ready...Game 4! Ba ba-ba-ba Ba ba-ba-ba!" If you remember, you know I'm not going mad! This all just goes to prove I watched too much TV when I should have been concentrating on my A Levels!

    • James the Cat

      Remember James the Cat? A self-satisfied feline with an over-inflated ego? The opening song words may jog your memory;

      My names James
      James the Cat
      I've got money
      Fame, and all that
      Now I'm here
      Growing fat
      Chasing birds and butterflies
      James the cat

Jamie and the Magic Torch Cool!!!!

POP QUIZ.......1..Name the dog in Jamie and the Magic Torch.

Place Your Mouse Here For the Answer!

      Dangermouse

....an all-time classic from Cosgrove-Hall......what more can I say?

POP QUIZ.......1..Name Dangermouse's partner, and his arch-enemy and sidekick, 2..on which eye did DM wear a patch?

Place Your Mouse Here For the Answer!

    • Vicky the Viking

Vicky the Viking was one of my favourite ever cartoons, although I could never work out why Vicky was American and his dad was Scottish. Basically wimp child wants to be big grown up strong Viking like his dad, but survives on wits alone........hmm.

"Hey hey Vicky, hey Vicky hey, you're Viking through and through" was how the theme went....or something...

POP QUIZ........Name Vicky the Viking's father. "I got it, I found the solution!!!"

PS...Check out the guestbook for a bit of info on Vicky the Viking.
